1998 E3 CD found..
« on: January 30, 2012, 01:15:08 am »
So I was at the swapmeet today digging through some boxes and found one factory sealed, got it for a buck.  It just says 1998 E3.  Acclaim, Product Info, Screen Shots, Video Clips.  Also has random video game character artwork on the cd.  I was going to open it as I'm eager to look at the stuff on it but then started wondering if this holds any value being sealed and all..  can't seem to find any info on this...

I personally think there was a reason its been left sealed since 1998  :dunno

If it were me, I'd crack it open, and have a good laugh at the small resolution, pixelated video files on the disc. The only value it has is from a nostalgic pov.

Just my 2c

Methinks this would be one of those items where being sealed would not make a difference in value. Matter of fact, sealed is often thought of as "more valuable" by a few, but for a lot of old items, it's simply not the case. A lot of buyers avoid sealed items since it's easy to fake and/or put worthless items in a box (unless they really, really know what to look for).

Open it up and check out life in the stone age of 1998.  ;)

Might need to microwave the disc for a few seconds to get the moisture out of the capacitors.

Maybe he can use a heatgun?  :laugh2:

Ha thanks guys.  Yeh I'm pretty sure it's not fake sealed, since I got it for only a dollar and it was buried in the bottom of a box, and it's not the traditional fake seal with the melted plastic, were talkin OG with the flaps and idk who would put the effort into fake sealin this.  Plus the lady sellin off all these boxes of cds clearly had no idea what she had..  she just said "All cd's one dollar".. most of it was music but there were a couple games mixed in.. from this same lady I came up on Resident Evil 2 for PS1 (2 discs box) for $2, tried to talk her down to $1.50 but she wasn't havin it since there were 2 cds inside, also got Road Rash (PS1), Rippin' Riders (Dreamcast), Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Dreamcast) all for a dollar each and are minty.

I haven't really decided yet if I'm going to open it up.  I really want to, mainly for the Turok picture it shows b/c I used to love that game when I was younger.  The artwork on the cd also shows Forsaken, South Park, and random football player.

I'll see if I can upload a picture of it later whenever my phone decides to start working again..

Heh, I doubt that was fake-sealed. Not worth the effort.  It's not exactly "Stadium Events". LOL  Just saying shrink-wrap doesn't always necessarily add to the value of things if there is interest in it.

Come to think of it, it may very well have come from someone who went to Acclaim for their ever-so-wonderful game tester position.  I actually went down to their offices in Great Neck, Long Island and came home with a bunch of swag - all of which I promptly tossed (no, nothing I regretted trashing). That promo CD could very well have been handed out to prospective testers back in 98.

I'm not surprised no one wanted to watch it; Acclaim was always barely-adequate but this was around the time they were becoming straight-up terrible.

Ha, I was wondering if anyone was going to mention that..  Although I do love me some haggling, the reason for that was simply because I only had that much on me.  Didn't want to have to get charged a fee at a swapmeet ATM and also my wife had wandered off somewhere and I really didn't feel like havin to call her over 50 cents, so I figured what the heck it's only 50 cents lady! ..eventually my wife came back with some sweet moolah

haggle it

Just yesterday, this guy had this item I wanted on Craigslist for $150. I thought "WTF, why not?" so I channeled my inner PBJ and emailed him, telling him that I had $100 cash in hand if he couldn't get rid of it in a few days and wanted to sell.

He just emailed me and told me $100 would be fine. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

  to you, James!

Nothing shameful about a straight forward no hassle cash offer.

It's the "I got $xxx cash in hand" line I've always liked. I used it myself, to great results.

umm... problem.  Opened up the cd, won't play/read on any of my computers or consoles so I'm pretty sure its an old cd-rom..  how do I get this to work on my computer??  Do I have to d/l a DOS emulator or something?  I'm running Vista, but it doesn't even show up in the D drive, when I right click and select Explore it just spits the disc out and says Please Insert A Disc

..I knew I should've just left it sealed

Well a modern pc should be able to read anything new enough to be on cdrom.  Is it a mac disc?  You should still be able to open it, but it might be causeing errors.

The easiest way to read/repair it is to make an iso of the image and open it in a hex editor.

oh noes! bit rot!

no, it's most likely the fancy laser in your drive might just be having a hard time picking up the data. i have disks i burned 20 years ago that don't read in my brand new drive but work fine in my older (5 years old maybe) dvd burner in my other computer.

TL:DR - try another cd rom drive.

I have tried it on 2 computers, both showing that there is no disc inserted.  And just for the hell of it, I tried it on the PS3, Xbox, an old dvd player and still got either no disc showing up or Disc Error.

How would I know if it's a mac disc?  I'll upload some scans in just  a sec.

If you have dual CD drives in a computer, try booting an Ubuntu Live CD. Best bet IMO. It will read Mac, Windows, and Linux formats and if that can't read it, then you sound SOL.

Maybe the disc has just gone bad  :dunno, or maybe it was defective from the get go. I remember PC gaming in 1998, and it had some good games, and some bad ones, but I don't recall any good games from Akklaim, maybe from a nostalgic pov, it would have been fun to have a look back at this. But you are more persistent than me, I'd have chunked it in the trash and cut my losses by now (time & money)  :lol

Hey wasn't there some stupid security feature that some discs used in the late 90's?  It was bypassed easily.... you held down left shift while it loads or something....

Thanks for the tips guys.  I tried it on my computer at work today b/c it has Windows 7 and got the same results..

When I inserted the disc, took a long time to load the green bar at the top and when it finally got done making all these noises, nothing happened.  Tried right clicking on the drive and Explore and it just spit it out and told me to insert a disc..

I don't know if you guys can tell from the scan but..  (maybe I should have mentioned this earlier)  but the bottom of the disc looks funky, it looks almost as if it has a clear layer over the shiny silver..  sorry idk how to explain it but it just looks like there's a layer covering the bottom.

Unfortunately I don't have dual cd drives on my computers..  I mean, my tower is setup for that but it only has one it, I guess I could go get another one if it comes down to that..  lets hope it doesn't b/c at this point I HAVE to see what's on this disc

Anymore ideas..?  I guess I'll try looking into the security feature for now and also see if I can find an older computer to try it on.  Someone at work suggested that maybe it's one of those 24 hrs discs that erases itself.. not sure if those were even around then..  another suggested that maybe it's one of those discs that can only be opened with certain programs (real player, quicktime, etc..)  tried those and no luck

My theory is that the disc has experienced some sort of disc 'rot'. It is more than likely in the last 13-14 years that the disc may not have been stored in the most ideal circumstances, i.e extreme temperature differences between hot and cold. Again just a theory, but it would explain why every single cd or dvd player you have tried netted zero results with what is on the disc.

This article is kinda old, but might give a little insight into what went wrong with your disc  :dunno

You should let Throwback Entertainment, The owners of the defunct Acclaim library, know your E3 CD doesn't work. They'd probably get a kick out of that.   ;)

WTF is up with this cd???  So the other day I noticed there were some slight smudges on the silver side, but I really couldn't wipe them off b/c there's like some clear layer over it, so I just put it back in the case..  this morning I took it out to look at the back and now there's like all this white powdery stuff smeared all around the bottom..  like someone spilled milk all over it and it dried up.  I don't get why it would do this now.. I mean it was factory sealed but it wasn't like it was air tight

Sucks that you couldn't get this working. Would have liked to have seen it.

This thread did get me thinking about late '90s gaming in general and Acclaim in particular though.

Acclaim always seemed like one of those companies that had the potential to make great games but always came up a bit short.

I remember picking up Turok back in the day when it was re-released as a Player's Choice title. People ranted and raved about that game...I started playing and just thought "That's it? This is what people are going on about?" I thought it was generic, confusing, and boring. And the damn fog drove me nuts. I know it was a technical limitation at the time, but other games seemed to work around it better. I think I tried to like it off and on for about a month and then just never played it again. I honestly think the only reason that game was so popular was that Nintendo fans were not used to getting M-rated games or FPS's, so it seemed like a big deal being the first game in that genre on the N64. If there had been any other decent ones out at the time, it probably would have been forgotten.

The NFL Quarterback Club games looked really good graphically, but were a little confusing play control wise and seemed a bit cold somehow - no personality.

The All Star Baseball games were quite good actually, but suffered a bit in the play control department.

Forsaken seemed a decent enough game at the time, but kind of forgettable.

Their 8-bit and 16-bit offerings were generally the same story. They always looked like they would be good, even seemed like they should be good as you played them, but always fell short somehow - usually some combination of poor control, too short, or just kind of dull.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Got it working!!

So check this out,  I wiped off all that mystery liquid that was dried up on the bottom of the cd.  Took about a good 5 minutes b/c it was just smearing around.  After that I threw it in my computer and wah lah,  Drive (D:) E398!

I quickly started copying everything to my computer and got halfway when all of a sudden it started getting all screwy and not letting me copy over a few folders..  popped the cd out and looked at the bottom only to find that it was all fogged up again!!  Cleaned it and got another 2 minute window before it started acting up again.

Got everything off the disc onto my computer except for one weird file in the WWF Warzone / Logo folder, had no file name extension..  read something like WWFswooshlogo

But yeh, good stuff.  Artwork/sketches from early development stages of games, pics, and lots of Quicktime videos with sweet 90s techno music.. the good kind tho, like the high energy kind from the Mortal Kombat movie  :P  I still don't know what keeps making it foggy on the bottom of the disc.. freakin bizarre.. was the disc sitting so long that the clear layer on the bottom was melting then drying..??

534MB, where should I upload?  The only place I ever used was Megaupload (RIP)  ..mediafire?

I think I've found a paradox portal to the past.

I've named it the Dre-w paradox.

can we get photos of your computer rig to prove my theory... I'm betting it's a 486dx-66 or a Pentium-75?

AOL and posting content from 1998.  You couldn't make this up if you tried.

 :laugh2:
Hilarity ensues.  Yeh I need to stop using that AOL account..  no excuses there.  Well if you took the Dre-w paradox portal back a couple posts, you would see that your theory has already been debunked..

I guess I'll try looking into the security feature for now and also see if I can find an older computer to try it on.

..I doubt I would need to find a computer older than those if I had one.   :lol  but if you wana know I've had this comp for about 4 years.  Nothin fancy,  it's a HP Pavillion A6237C desktop pc

The only complaint I have is it came with Vista..

But yeh I'll try to get this uploaded, if not tonight for sure tomorrow.  Wife wants to go out, being it's Valentines Day n all.....

Where do you live Drew?  Video Land?

We need to setup a proper site for your stuff if you are going to keep finding these things.  I think it's nice to preserve it somewhere because it's considered throwaway media...  in other words nobody else is doing it.

Yeh I got this one to work no problem.  I actually like this one a lot better.  Covers 16 games and it has a program that runs this cool interactive menu.

Haha Video Land.  Yes.  Orange County CA..  and believe me, it's pretty rare to find anything video game related out here at a good price.  I always see people in forums posting these ultra rare finds they got for dirt cheap and they're usually in some small town or back country away from big cities..  makes me hate this crowded overpriced place even more.  And your right.. I swear if I find another one of these this weekend I'll make a dedicated site lol.
