Can't burn ISO - okay, this didn't get solved.....
« on: January 24, 2012, 07:39:23 pm »
I'm trying to burn a 3.5gb image to an Imation 4.5gb DVD-RW. It says video and data on it, so I assume it can do both.

See last post for latest information.

HA! I read Gray's post and my immediate thought was ImgBurn, but you beat me to it. ;)

So I'll second it. I used to mess around with Nero, didn't like it, got ImgBurn which is awesome and free, never looked back.

I'm using Nero 6. When I start the burn process, the disc ejects, and Nero says there's an error. In part of the log, it says 'illegal disc'.

I don't get it.

You are burning it in the UDF format right?  Gotta watch that 2gb Limit on 9660.

Originally, I selected copy and back-up>burn image to disc, and selected the directory. When that didn't work, I tried 'data>make bootable DVD - which is where it said '2gb limit'.

I have written data of up to 6.5gb on a DVD using nero. Just not with these particular discs (25-pack). Tried another one in the set, same behavior.

I like Verbatim DVD media and anything that has Ritech (Dye).  You can overburn Ritechs and they seems to be more compatible with other readers and burners.  Sony DVD media on the other hand is just rubbish.

But any image over 2gb you need to burn it in the UDF format.

+1 to Ark_ader . . . if you want to eliminate the media as a possible problem, Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim are the best.

Hmhmhmh. I wouldn't think so. I've used this same nero to write tinyXP 10 and 11, to
DVD and CD, respectively.

I didn't see any option for 'UDF' in Nero.

I just tried ImgBurn. Errored out, too. I guess the discs can only be written at 1x .......(?????)......so I tried that in Nero, and same problem. These discs are maybe only made for video? They're DVD-RW, and say 4.7gb  2 hours video.

You have to use the Main Nero Program and I do believe UDF is under ISO format on one of the options.

Illegalz...and Tiny XP  :P

Here is a couple things you could try:

-In Nero, try selecting "Determine maximum speed" in the "Burn Compilation" Window
-Upgrade the firmware of your DVD drive. Heres a link, youll have to find the model. http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/firmware/fwdownload/fwdownload.asp
-Clean the laser
-Trade your spindle of disks for a friends spindle. (If they work for him that is)
-Buy/use another DVD drive.

Oh, and there is no such thing as disks made only for video.

I don't see any UDF format selection in either of these programs. I'm wondering why it ain't automatic.

Not that I haven't burned a 1+gb image using nero, just by pressing the button. These discs must be bad.

I probably misunderstood you, but UDF is for 3+gb images.  You should be able to burn 1gb in 9660.

Hmm. I'm going to be switching to a duo core for my general purpose rig (finally making my old main rig arcade-dedicated), so I probly should move up to that. Hadn't though of it, though, so thanks.

I'm no expert, but it seems to be an incompatibility with your drive and the media.  Try updating your firmware for the drive to see if that helps recognize the media.  I suppose the media could be bad, but I've never run across that.

it's not entirely uncommon for cd drives to just go tits up.

is it reading regular cd's okay? perhaps the blank media is incompatible with the drive.

i had an HP cd burner that would not write to verbatim disks...changed to sony....no probs.

Why are you using RW and not just R?  I've had issues in the past with RW discs.

That's why I mentioned they were RW. Could be it. It's definitely not the drive, at least regarding CD media. I just burned XP onto a fifteen-year-old NIC gold archive CD, and using it to install on a machine right now.

And, as said, I've used nero to burn TinyXP 10, which was over a gig. Also did two CD of music of a few gigs each. Used the exact same PC system in all three cases.

I just tried to put a smaller image on it and nero said it was the wrong media.  I'm thinking these are weird discs.

I was initially using Nero 6. Using Nero 11, I was able to write a gig+ to these discs. Don't know what's different, but it works.

Well for starters Nero 6 was around about 10 years ago, whereas 11 is built for newer devices.  So yeah, gotta use the latest version.  Also, just use Imgbun.  Can I assume you're using an illegal copy of Nero?  The reason I say that is I was in the same boat as you.  I used illegal 6 for so long and then it started acting up.  Then used illegal 11 and then just went to Imgburn.  So much simpler and it's free.

Oh, and I didn't have to select no 'UDF' nothin.

Well, I thought this was solved. However, the Nero 10 disc I created wouldn't boot. So I tried the latest IMGBurn: the disc wrote, but failed the verify. I found similar reports, but no solutions.

Note that this last effort was on both my old system and a completely different system (hardware and OS installation). So I think I can safely say these discs are bad. Too bad they're a few years old. But cheap enough.

Pretty much sounds like you need to create an environment where you can eliminate variables.  Ala connecting the drive with said CD's to a new computer/using said cd's on same computer with a new drive/using same computer and same drive with different cds.  Mix and match until you find one that consistently doesn't work.

They all consistently don't work. More work than it's been worth. I've never had trouble with discs. I should burn these in a juju pot and pray to the dark gods that no one ever has such issue.
