« on: January 01, 2012, 08:39:08 pm »
I have something similar to this

which is powered from a cars cigarette lighter socket, would a pc psu using the 12v line be able to power this?

I want to use it for blowing out dust from pc's fan and similar

How much current does it draw?

It dont give a current draw? Wattage?

If it doesnt draw over a few amps it should be ok, unless it puts a lot of noise on the 12 volt buss.
You could always just hook it up and try it. (to an old computer first, if you have one).

I've found that many computer PSUs are weird when it comes to trying to use them as a plain power supply.

The reason is that unless the power cable is actually connected to a motherboard, they often won't power up the 12v or 5v rails.

Supposedly, there's a jumper or something that you can plug into the main power connector that makes the PSU +think+ it's connected to a mobo, and then it will power up even though there's no connection, but I can't seem to find any details right now...

Green wire on the main ATX cable to any black wire.  The pin numbers unfortunately vary with what size connector you have (the older 20 or the newer 24 pin version).  The wikipedia article on "ATX" has the pinouts.

Note that the supply needs a somewhat sizable (several hundred mA) load on typically both the 5V and 12V rails for it to run.

And here I thought you were going to do something crazy like add pneumatic buttons to a cabinet.
