RANGERCADE 1st attempt at a cabinet
« on: November 03, 2016, 01:15:45 pm »
What's up all

Not gonna lie I found this hobby by accident.  I bought a RaspberryPi to run kodi on my TV.  Then found out I runs emulators and 1 thing led to another and about a month after I found out about the hobby I'm ready to dive in.

I decided to go bartop since I have a limited amount of space and have a kitchen table I don't use.  I have a design pretty much all done but put it on the back burner for now.  I'll explain my reasoning in a moment.

1st off I'm a huge sports fan and after looking at probably 100 different arcades I was really impressed with knievals Flyercade.  Using it as inspiration I wanted to make one that reflected my favorite sports team in the rangers.  I will post pictures and document as I go.

The thing I wanted which is important to me is a removable panel.  I have a ton of youngins in my family and with the holidays coming up i figured if I have the panel they could enjoy it since they can't go outside.  But I want to make sure the design fits in flawlessly with the cabinet.  This is giving me issues as I know the panel design I want so I'm design the cabinet around it.

I'm going with 2 player 8 button each with a 1p 2p 2 coin buttons and 4 admin buttons.  I have a lot of Amazon gift card money from winning my fantasy football league last yr so I'm sourcing as much as I can from there.

I got these 10 blue red and white led buttons.

I also found Mag-stik-plus Arcade Joystick on amazon.

Unfortunately they didn't have the trackball I wanted.  So I'm going with the U-track from ultimarc.

I'm gonna use the I-Pac ultimate as my interface.

For now I'm going to run it through the Pi and yes I know it's not ideal but the cpu I want to use to run it with needs to be reformatted and configured.

Any feed back and advice will be appreciated.

im having issues embedding my pictures but they're below my post

EDIT:  After reading gsxr's critique i went and redesigned the cab and resized my panel.  the base of the panel will be permanently attached to the panel, and the base will attach to the cab using something i havnt thought of to keep it in place

Based on your controls layout your bartop will be huge and not something you can easily move around so will probably less practical than a fullsize cabinet. Also looking at your control panel design it looks like the player 1 joystick would intersect the cabinet side.

As you want it portable maybe just build a nice boxed control panel which also houses the Pi, then you only need to run a power supply to it and a HDMI cable out for hooking it up to a TV/screen.

This is going to be massive. Make a cardboard template first and see if your happy with the size.  I'd keep things simple for a first build, but it's your build, so I'll just add -  good luck
