Very confused about this arcade monitor...
« on: December 08, 2011, 09:14:24 pm »
Hi guys, first time here but I'm hoping some of the experts have some insight into what's going on. I'll try to make it as short and concise as possible.

- Bought a Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition Cabinet (works fine, no issues with it or the original board, just wanted to add some games to it as well as keep it intact)
- Bought a JPAC
- Using an NVIDIA card, have tried soft15khz, powerstrip, mamewah res tool, advancemame, and winmodelines

Now the part where I'm trouble is, I can't figure out what resolution to use with this monitor. I've tried all the recommended resolutions with soft15khz, powerstrip, and winmodelines out of the FAQS. None of those function (either monitor splits or blacks out). I tried the supposedly native resolution of SF2CE (384x224) but that doesn't display.

The strange part is, when I select standard 800x600 or 1024x768, the monitor displays them with no scrolling and minor flickering. When I load up hyperspin or mame the picture looks pretty good, but the top and bottom 15% or so of the screen is cut off. When I adjust the v-size, it eventually fills in but the top and bottom are very squished. The picture looks pretty good when I have it adjusted to have the black bars on the top or bottom.

Is there any way to get it to take up the whole screen? I can try and post up a video of the effect if it would be helpful.

Thanks!

Jack Burton

Hmmm.

A video or pictures will be helpful.

A couple of questions:

-When you say 800x600 displays fine do you mean running under Soft 15khz or some other program?  Or just plain old 800x600 straight from your graphics card unaltered?

-Can you look at the back of the monitor and see any information relating to manufacturer or model?

I have soft15khz installed @ 15khz, windows desktop resolution set to 800x600. Out of all the standard and arcade resolutions I've tried, this looks the best. Unfortunately I can't really get to the back of the monitor, the cabinet is sealed pretty tightly... in fact I'm not even sure how they got it in there in the first place. There are some stickers on the bottom that I'll try and get shots of, as well as a video uploading now of the effect I'm seeing.

Thanks for the reply, I'll post up the pics/vids soon as I have them.

Here's some video, apologies for the glare as it wasn't easy to capture the issue. Also sorry about the music, apparently Youtube only lets you replace the sound and not mute it completely.

Basically, if I lower the v-size to the minimum, I have about a 1.5" black border on the top and bottom. As I increase it, the top increases as you would expect. The bottom just squishes and then slowly fills out to the bottom (unfortunately squeezed). The best I've been able to do is get it dwn to about .75" border on the top and bottom with a little bit of squishing on the bottom. Wasn't able to do any better with my fiddling.

I'll try and get pictures of the bottom of the monitor tomorrow.

Try adjusting the V position first to move it further down, and then adjust the size.

Not sure why CGA resolutions don't seem to be working.  In 800x600 is the windows desktop flickering?  If so, that means you are running interlaced.

Moving the v-position to the lowest setting is the best I've tried so far, with it all the way down and the v-size tweaked a little bit I can get the top border to about .75" and the bottom one to about .75", with the bottom half inch or so of picture squished (which usually doesn't have too much in it).

In 800x600 the desktop itself doesn't flicker or anything. Very thin lines flicker a little bit and the text is a bit fuzzy, but its pretty usable to tool around in the system and edit stuff.

If you have single pixel lines flickering then you're definitely in interlaced mode.

There are a couple of things that could be causing your issue with the screen size.  I don't want to jump to any conclusions til we get all the information we can.

Your monitor does display correctly when using the SFII pcb, right? It fills up the whole screen?

Yessir, looks perfect. Also the single pixel lines flickering only happens in Windows, I don't have anything like that in hyperspin or any of the games.
