I use Windows Media Center with media browser on Windows7.  I like it a lot.  XBMC seems similar.

I've used JRiver Media Center for ages. I'm planning on using it in my Jukebox build. I know it has what seems to be a pretty good touchscreen skin, but I haven't used it extensively yet, so we'll see.

But it's got tons of other features which make it pretty compelling for me.

I would recommend using XBMC.  Also, you may want to take a look at something like OpenELEC (read about it on XBMC.org).  OpenElec is a fork of XBMC that uses a mimimal version of linux to boot directly into XBMC stripping away any unnecessary services, and has some additional features as well.

If you're going to use this specifically for HTPC software, no point wasting RAM/CPU on unneeded OS services.

You could also give Plex a try.

I'm currently using a 1.5tb NAS that is DLNA compatible, hooks up directly with my TV, receiver and all my PCs.  That's the way to go.
