My Mortal Kombat II Mame Arcade progress
« on: October 31, 2011, 01:05:29 pm »
Hey, everyone.  Just wanted to show off a few pictures of the work I've done so far.  I still need to re-paint the sides of the cab as I had to patch a few screw holes, change the t-molding to red, wire the coin doors to be used with the ipac, finish the shelving underneath/behind the coin doors, etc.

This is the cab I was given.  It's an original MK2 cab, but had been converted into World Class Bowling before it was gutted.  (Can you spot KITT too?)  Sorry for the quality of these pics.  I currently have this at my work so I only carry my cell phone.  Once it's finished, I'll have some better pics.

Here is where I'm at so far.  Still some work to be done, but at least it's playable at this point.

A closer shot of the CPO.  Credit to Vlad and Gameongrafix for the design and CPO.

I take it you're also going to be playing MK3, seeing as you have a run button. But isn't MK meant to play on a 4:3 monitor, not 16:9?

Edit: I'd actually recommend a 14:9 monitor

Thanks, ctozzi!

postmortem, I'm using a LG 26" LED HDTV.  It's actually in there in that picture, just not powered on.  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+26%22+Class/+LED+/+720p+/+60Hz+/+HDTV/2137052.p?id=1218310759402&skuId=2137052&st=lg

jsb98, you're exactly right about also playing MK3.  I also made the CP with an extra "block" button so it could also have the Street Fighter 2 button layout.  I'm also planning on adding buttons like pause, tab, esc, etc. but put them underneath where the control panel hangs over (above the coin doors).  We'll see how that turns out.  8)  And I just chose this TV because I also plan on doing more than just playing MAME on it (like playing my PS3 and even watching TV with it - if you look closely, you can see a 1/4" hole in the bottom right corner of the "beveled" edge on the bezel for the remote sensor).  This arcade won't just be dedicated to Mortal Kombat, I just chose to give it the MK2 theme since it's my favorite arcade.  I knew I'd have to sacrifice the original aspect ratio and authentic arcade look by going with this TV.  I'm just glad I was able to find a TV that fit snuggly in the cab's opening (25_1/8" opening, TV measure 25" across) and got very lucky in that Happ's bezel for their 26" LCD monitor fit perfectly around this TV.  All I had to do was cut the bezel down from 28" x 25" to 25" x 25" (outside dimensions)...no need to mess with the opening that fits around the TV.  OK, I'm rambling now.  Thanks for the comments, guys!

Just another progress picture.  Finally got it home to the man-cave!   8)   I figured out the original speakers still work, so those are hooked up and working great!  Also got the t-molding switched to red.  Still need to do the coin doors, and add the side art as well as the control panel front & side art.

It's an LG 26" LED HDTV that I got from Best Buy.  The model number is 26LV2500  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+26%22+Class/+LED+/+720p+/+60Hz+/+HDTV/2137052.p?id=1218310759402&skuId=2137052&st=lg

It fits like it was meant for this cab!   8)  The TV itself actually measures 25" across.  Aside from the more "pixelated" look that you get with HDTV's, I think it works perfectly fine as far as MAME is concerned.  But, keep in mind, I'm not the pickiest person in the world either.  But I'm not seeing any noticeable difference between this TV and the 32" LCD HDTV I was using before aside from the LG having a brighter picture.

Another plus with this TV is that Happ's 26" monitor bezel - http://na.suzohapp.com/monitors/49028800.htm - fits perfectly around the screen.  I just needed to cut the outside dimensions of the bezel down from 28" x 25" to 25" x 25".

Does this TV have the auto return to on after power loss? I know you have the hole for your remote but would just hooking it up to a smart strip be an option? I have the exact set up and I am about to buy the monitor. Ps thanks for providing the links, you really got my project rolling.
