[Completed] Street Fighter Arcade Cab -Previously "Girls of"
« on: September 19, 2011, 03:43:58 pm »
I've been trying to think of a theme for my new project and I keep coming back to this idea of "Girls of Street Fighter" or "Fighting Girls" cab with the graphics being themed on all the fighting game girlies.

I've made the decision to base the cab design on the Global Arcade Classics machine like a few others in here because I like the look of those and I want something smaller than my last (giant quad machine).

I ordered the monitor (Makvision 2929D-72) and got the computer humming nicely with groovymame and Hyperspin.  Now I just have to build the cab.

I built it already in 3d and even mocked up some possible graphics just grabbing stuff off the web.  I'm not completely sold on the graphics yet.  Let me know what you guys think....

*EDIT:  I renamed the Subject because I'm not doing "Girls of Street Fighter" but rather an overall Street Fighter inspired machine.

I like it - but don't Ken and Ryu need some surgery to meet the requirements?

How ironic, I find dudes that don't like cartoony asian women commiting violence to be creepy.

Yeah, obviously I just threw that marquee up there for it.  I'm still not sold.  I might do my own retro thing.. I was thinking about it over lunch.. maybe do space invaders but as rendered 3d particles (do like thousands of them flying up the cab side).  Dunno yet.  I thought the girls would be fun, colorful and light-hearted.. not creepy.   ::)

I dig the art, but if I think you should at least make it more than just street fighter girls.  You can't forget the Darkstalkers girls.  But I totally know what you mean with the debate... I'm constantly daydreaming about another project and I'd be torn between a rendition of something already existing or something original that looks like it could have been a real arcade.  I always loved the crystal castles art.

It has begun.

I cut the 2 sides out today but they need a lot of sanding to get them even.  I still haven't decided on the graphics.  I need to do some renders and see if something catches my fancy... otherwise it's going to be fighting chicks.

Hey Martijn... your Street Fighter build is what inspired mine!

I think I'm going to follow yours and do laminate.  That has such a finished look to it.  Besides, I painted my last one and i want to do something different.

The rounded cabinet has been quiet a bit more difficult than the straight edge one.  It's more work but I'm not as crazy anxious to get it done like I was last time so I'm enjoying the build itself.

I'm looking for a router bit that can cut my t-molding groove now.  This is going to be another challenge with the rounded edge.. how to cut a consistent groove.  :dunno

Don't worry about it. Just go slowly and it won't be any more trouble than a straight edge.

Would there be any reason to laminate the sides that are going to have printed graphics?  Wouldn't you just be covering the laminate?

well when i laminate the side it gives a smooth surface, any wood imperfections of gapes are gone. its a strong surface like a kitchen table, that gives a professional feel when you touch the artwork and surface , also easy to pull back the art and reapply.

I might have screwed myself for laminate.  I'm building with 3/4" MDF so if I add a laminate, will my t-molding not cover the edges... or do they make a larger t-molding for this event?

If it is not wide enough you could always order 13/16" or even 1" t-molding from these guys: http://www.t-molding.com.  Then if it is to wide you could get a quad trimmer from fastcap to trim off whatever is overhanging like so:

An obvious way would be to set it on a straight area, cut it, then place it in the corner (at least it sounds like that would work).

I have one of these quad trimmers. I was going to use it to trim the 3/4" tmolding off of my 3/4" plywood.  I'll try and take some pictures of some test cuts this evening.

Well yeah that would work I suppose, but I meant more for things like a curve - both inside and outside curves might be too much for this tool.

I'm building this one around the monitor so everything it test fit against the bezel here.  I've got the t-mold routed in and the support pieces on.

I've also placed the monitor mount brackets in (2x4s) and placed the monitor on to test fit.  Do you guys think I need more support for this heavy monitor?  I could build more of a frame inside but is that necessary?

In my tests with 5/8 plywood there is a bit of a gap after laminating.  That quad trimmer might be just the ticket.

Assembled the body and painted.  I decided to hand off the controller work to Dream Home Arcades to complete... I'm just too lazy and they are suppose to be the best so I'm sure they'll do way better than I would have.

I'll have the graphics this week.  I'm printing them at my family's print shop.  I want to give them a plug here.  The place is called Carolina Canvas www.carolinacanvas.com and they are great (and cheap).  They specialise in large format printing.  Mine will be printed on a thin, self adhesive vinyl that is UV protected so it should last forever.

Here's the cab so far...
