Soylent Green
« on: August 06, 2011, 11:38:48 am »
Just watched Soylent Green movie (DVD from Netflix).
Very good movie for the time it was made (1972).
Movie is set in 2022. It was very interesting how far off the technology predictions were in 1972.

Telephones with dials on them. TV in the start of the movie looked like an old CRT that took several seconds to come on. Cars that looked old, but were 50's 60's models (There probably wont be a handful of those left by 2022).
Police dont carry radios of any kind. (Even police in Mad Max had radios).

But the reason I am posting this here is that the Asteroids (Im pretty sure) game that is featured.
I think it has a label "Computer Space" or something like that, label is not highly visible.
I thought it was funny that such an old game would be a hot item in 2022. Of course they didnt have much to work with in 1972.

But all in all, this was a good movie. Not to mention fantastic acting by the lates Charlton Heston and Edward G Robinson (this was his 101st movie), but the movie shows a peek at what could happen to mankind if this technological world we have created falls apart.

I haven't seen Soylent Green in a while but I love the look of the SiFi movies of that era.   "The Omega Man" (another Heston movie) in-particular is creepier to me than the remake "I am Legend" even though Legend has much better effects.  For some reason just the way those early 70's movies were shot is creepy and compelling.  I'll have to check out Soylent Green again.

Yes! I love that era of sci-fi as well...as dated as The Omega Man got, it is still creepier than the remake. Heston rules!

Asteroids was released in 1979.
Soylent Green was released in 1973 or therabouts.
Computer Space was released in err.... 1971? Too lazy to verify.

If you're talking about that beautiful white cab that looks like its more at home on E.T.'s planet, the yes, it is a Computer Space.   ;D

Speaking of the Omega Man, I liked the version with Vincent Price in it.
What was the title? Was it "The Last Man on Earth"?

Yeah, just googled it:

The white Computer Space from the movie sold a couple years ago. I can't remember the specifics, but it was verified as the real deal and the price was high.

I also love watching the technology predictions from movies. Blade Runner is a great one to re-watch because it got some stuff right and some stuff way off. The giant LED styled advertising is amazingly close to the changing signs we have on the PA Turnpike... Then you see CRT TV's and flying cars. Its great.

Its funny because the portable communication predictions were pretty accurate in 50's and 60's sci-fi, then in the late 70's and early 80's film makers kind of backed off on it.
