Upgrading from WG D9200 - Going from PC to MAC
« on: August 04, 2011, 02:03:37 pm »
Guys,
I've been off this forum and out of the Mame loop for awhile now and I'm looking for a quick answer.  I've owned a 27" WG D9200 arcade monitor for about 5-6 years.  It's installed in my Slik Stik cabinet.  I've since switched over to everything Apple and I have no use for my PC anymore.

I'm thinking about putting an 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 Mac Mini in my cabinet and dedicating it purely to running Mac OS X (w/Lion), but now I'm worried about two things.  One, is the HDMI output and second is whether the resolution would be compatible with my monitor as is.

I could probably get an HDMI to VGA adaptor and keep my monitor, but I'm wondering if there is now something better on the market.  Because I've always hated that my D9200 couldn't get better than 800x600 resolution.

Can anyone offer up a suggestion to replace my 27" WG D9200 monitor that has better resolution, HDMI input, and will fit my Slik Stik cabinet as well?

Thanks.

Is it time to switch to an HDTV then?

WG has ceased production of CRTs, the Makavision 29" CRT only supports 800x600, and the newer WG 26" LCD doesn't support HDMI, only VGA (but should fit your cab more easily).  The WGF3299-SIAS03J is 32" LCD which does DVI according to the WG web site, don't know if it'll fit in your cabinet though.

If you're willing to make the switch to LCD, then in addition to Arcade-based LCDs, you can just throw a HDTV in there.  I mean really, once you're on LCD, what's the point of going to a traditional arcade monitor manufacturer...  "durability?"  "Ease of install?"  Both are a bit of a fallacy in a custom built home-based set up.  And the panels are all probably made by Samsung anyway - heck WG says as much for their 19" setups.

BTW - Lion gets rid of Rosetta, so some older mac games have issues.  http://news.softpedia.com/news/PowerPC-Games-Hit-Hard-by-OS-X-Lion-212902.shtml

As far as I know, MAME isn't current on Mac. If you're going all the way, you might consider Linux and SDLMAME.

Mac OS X works in Lion.

Why do you need higher than 800x600 on an arcade cabinet?  You have a no-longer-manufactured monitor type that is perfect for this hobby (handles native arcade resolutions as well as VGA and SVGA) and which people would kill for.  I can only assume you are not currently using the native resolutions available with that monitor?
