K7193 vertical collapse - questions
« on: August 04, 2011, 02:37:45 am »
Hi All!

I purchased a 25" WG K7193 from a guy who was cleaning out his basement.  I was told the monitor worked when it was put into storage, but since the guy has cleaned out his collection I had no way of knowing if the monitor actually worked.  I took a chance and bought it and when I finally got it wired to my cab, I got a collapsed vertical line in the middle of the screen.

I don't know a whole lot about troubleshooting, but what I could dig up leads me to the IC.  I just want to make sure I hooked up my monitor to my mame cab correctly.  I hooked the monitor through the Jamma harness....which was tricky as my j-pac bit the dust a while ago.  So I used a jamma i/o board(USB2GUN) from an America's Army that had vga input (connected to my pc) and the jamma monitor connector was a 6-pin connector (R*G*B*gr*space*sync)  The K7193 had what looked to be a 9-pin pinout (R*G*B*gr*+V*+H*gap*gr*-V*-H).  I just plugged my jamma monitor wiring connector to the monitor without using the last 3 pins on the right (gr*-V*-H).

Did I connect the monitor to the PC correctly?  Or... was I responsible for the vertical collapse?

A vertical line is a *horizontal* collapse (lack of horizontal deflection).

It may just be that the horizontal yoke connection is loose, which can happen during transport.

Otherwise, it sounds like you may have fed the monitor something it couldn't handle.  This usually takes out the HOT.  Remember that arcade monitors cannot generally display anything that a PC typically puts out.

Don't run it long in this state.  You're likely to take out lots of other stuff.

Sorry MonMotha, I meant to say I had a thin horizontal line going across the middle of the monitor.  When I was researching it, the term that kept coming up was vertical collapse.

When I tested the monitor, I had the mame cabinet (running groovymame) running Donkey Kong feeding a native rez CGA signal to the monitor before I even plugged in the power cord.  Hopefully I didn't cause any damage to the monitor myself.

I wasn't sure if I needed to replace the ic or I had an improper connection from the Jamma harness to the chassis connector...??

First thing I would do is pull the chassis and scour the entire thing for bad solder joints. (including neckboard)
In your case, especially around the vertical IC and the yoke connector pins.
But the biggest thing is the K7000's have numerous places that are notorious for bad solder joints, better to take care of those prior to trying to troubleshoot.
Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

Will do...I'll pull the chassis this weekend and breakout my magnifying galss and shop light.

Thanks for the advice!

Found a bad solder joint on the neck board Q302...what does this do?  Is this related to the vertical collapse?  Anyway, this will have to be resoldered.  So far that's all I found. (need bigger magnifying glass)

Attached are pics I took from my teardown.  Another question:  The plastic interface at the end of the neck tube that mates with the neck board is all broken.  Can this be replaced?

**EDIT**  Oh yeah...failed to mention that the chassis is not original WG7193.  It's a Sharp Image SI-320Z chassis.   :dunno

The neck board is responsible for delivering color signals to the tube. Nothing to do with deflection. You need to go over the main board for cracked solder. Clean/reseat the yoke connectors as well. The H section is running, you would get nothing if it wasn't.
