Perhaps, although Damon never got to play any major iconic roles.

Probably because he wasn't a credible action hero.   ;D

Not to mention there are not too many iconic roles to go around these days. It's really hard to top Ford's Han Solo/Jack Ryan/Indiana Jones Combo.

Orlando Bloom?  Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings compare with Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Two lines found in almost any Will Smith movie:

'Aw HELL no!'

And

'I gotta get me one of these!'

Dear god no. Im going to have to disagree with you there. He has that same kind of "pity me, I look helpless" kind of look in every movie BUT lord of the rings... Did you see Troy? Or that movie where he is a knight?

After I met Matt Damon, I couldnt take him seriously as anything but the dude in Ocean's 11. He is good at that type of character, and Rounders, but an action star? Meh.  :dunno

Im hoping the new Conan is going to be the next big huge action star. I saw him at Comic Con for Game of Thrones. The dude is YOKED.  :o And pretty tall, Im 6'3, and he was a tad taller than me. I myself havent seen GoT so I dont know if he can act, but man. Being that buff, you dont have to. For action anyway.  ;D
Pictures are overrated anyway.

I have always been surprised The Rock didn't end up in that place.  Seems tailor made for him.  Maybe Will Smith keeps taking his jobs.   ;D

Everyone knows him from wrestling, so maybe nobody wants to cast him in anything. What has he done besides the Scorpion King and Doom? Has he ever acted well in a movie?

Yeah, he's been in a lot of other movies, did 4-5 kid movies like Tooth Fairy and Gridiron Gang.  I thought he was good in The Rundown and Walking Tall.  It looks like he's trying to not be the big action guy of his own choice.  He's taking lots of roles that avoid the perception.

Went to the gym at lunch, saw this buff dude and thought, "man I'd love to see that dude in a loin cloth pretending he was Conan the Barbarian"

There, now do I fit in?

You sure do seem to fear that possibility.

So to summarise, you don't think he's going to have as outstanding transition as Will Smith...

Will Smith put himself on Hollywood's map with Six Degrees of Separation.  That gay con man role was so alien to any prior public perception of him that it was either going to make or destroy his movie career.  He was excellent and jumped straight from there to leading man status.  Note that was barely halfway through his sitcom run.

He was brilliant in that, wasn't he? I remember when I saw a scene where he had a huge monologue while he was cooking in someones kitchen. That sort of thing takes a lot of skill or a lot of natural talent to look right.
