Here is my list:

N64 - The Rumble Pack (mostly from a bad experiance, some of you might remember the story. :puke. Nonetheless, I couldn't help but think Nintendo was overly patting themselves on the back about the rumble pack)

N64 - Memory Expansion

Dreamcast - VMU (Great in concept, very little actual usefulness)

Genesis - The Activator

SNES - Multitap

Gamecube - The Broadband adaptor.

Man those are good ones. The multitap for sure. Im going to add:

Gamecube/Gameboy Advance: The connector thing, I dont know what its called, where you can connect your GBA to your gamecube. I think there were only 2 games that used it, zelda four swords adventures, and  FF: Crystal chronicles.

SNES- Super scope six. My dad got me one and it was retarded, only had one game for it and it blew. Hard.

NES- I also forgot the name of it, but that headset thing that let you use voice commands, and covered one eye. Only worked with Captain Skyhawk as far as I know.

I apologize in advance for not knowing the names of things.  ;D
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Only problem with the rumble pack and multi tap is that subsequent consoles have rumble and multiplayer built in, so it couldn't have been that bad of an idea.

+1 on the game cube GBA connection thing, I forgot about that one

PocketStation for the PSX  import only, and like 7 games used it. It was basically a dreamcast VMU before there was a dreamcast VMU
Sega Channel for Sega Genesis .Too far ahead of its time
Batter Up for SNES/Genesis. a mercury switch inside a foam bat
XBand for SNES and Genesis. 56k online fighting!
Gameboy Camera and Printer .....seriously, this existed
HD-DVD for Xbox 360.  Well this is a toss up, I still use mine as an external bootable DVD drive for PCs.
I'm torn on saying the 32X, cause even though only a dozen or so games were released, nothing could top the joy I had of playing Virtua Fighter and Racing in my bedroom when I was younger.

NES- I also forgot the name of it, but that headset thing that let you use voice commands, and covered one eye. Only worked with Captain Skyhawk as far as I know.
That sounds like the Konami LaserScope, but it was like a replacement for the Zapper.

Malenko, good job on the Gameboy camera/printer, I forgot about that, but I remember it now, the commercials at least. Ahh. Laserscope. That rings a bell. I remember seeing the ad on the back of comics, with some punk kid looking like he had the time of his life, which, in reality, the thing sucked harder than a toothless hooker.

Im also going to say the bongos from Donkey Konga for the N64. Played it at Circuit City when it came out. I thought the thing was a joke. Im a drummer too, so, you think if anyone would like it, it would be me and my ilk.

Donkey Konga was for the Gamecube.  It was actually kinda fun, and the adventure game with it was fun to play too.  I wouldn't call that a complete fail.  Just like the NES zapper wasn't a complete fail, even though most people only played duck hunt with it, and maybe Hogan's alley

Oh ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- that was for GC? Thats weird, thought it was N64. Seemed really dated when I played it. Hm. Like I said, I just played it at CC so I didnt really give it a shot, just seemed expensive for just one game. See the Zapper was cool because it came with the Nintendo, but it was fun, and you used it a lot with duck hunt, hogans alley, etc. I used to use it as a play gun when I wasnt using it when I was a kid, cause it looked like a laser gun. I had the grey one, not the stupid orange one.

Intellivision Music Synthesizer

One supported (---smurfy---) game.  Was this thing even ever released?  See also Intellivision computer keyboard.

And this is a close second: The Aura Interactor... what a piece of work this thing was, basically a subwoofer attached to your chest, that's it.

Anybody who says the power glove is "god like" clearly has never actually TRIED to play a game with it.

I'm talking actually play, not bring it out and masturbate with it.

In a way you have a point. I would gladly take just about any of these old peripherals if they were given to me, but what is represented in this thread is crushed dreams and promises that these devices would add hours of amazing video game play to our lives.

Completely failed expectations.

You guys pretty much nailed all the bad ones.  Though I'd like to add these control pads that were made for the Genesis and SNES (I forgot the name of them) where there was no D-pad; you had to move your thumb over the sensor.  It was supposed to be easier for fighting games (to pull off the special moves) but it just felt weird and uncomfortable.  (I only got them because the company sent me two for free for some reason.)

The eReader for the GBA was a decent idea that ultimately didn't add up to much.  Having to swipe a bunch of cards to play Ice Climber while this big hulking thing was sticking out of your handheld was more trouble than it was worth.

Also, the fret controller (whatever it's called) for the Nintendo DS version of Guitar Hero.  I think five minutes after it came out, they updated the DS to the DSi - removing the GBA slot in the process - rendering that peripheral unusable to those who upgraded.

I could go on - but I'm at work and should probably stop.

I made heavy use of Zip disks in college and they made my life a whole lot easier.  There weren't a whole lot of options at that time for moving 100meg of data around.  CD writers and CDRs were out of reach for a poor college student.

I do wish the drives were made better.  I had too many zip disks eaten by their own drives.

I finally pitched my Iomega drive a couple of years ago.  I agree, the failure rate was high but they were handy well before flash drives were cheap.

Any of those old intellivision/atari/commodore "voice recognition" peripherals. Voice recognition failure 99%

The intellivision one probably was a voice synthesizer. I don't remember much these days. I am pretty sure the atari 2600 and c64/128 had crappy voice recognition devices though.

Intellivision's was a synthesizer.  It supported 3 or 4 games.  Nothing extraordinary but still cool.  One was a Tron game, B22 bomber was another.

Atari sucks so what did you expect from them?   >:D

Was the intellivision the system where you would slide in different cards into the controller that would tell you what each button did? Things are getting fuzzy for me on the intellivision...  :dizzy:

Speaking of Intellivision... I always hated the controllers for that thing.

Was the intellivision the system where you would slide in different cards into the controller that would tell you what each button did? Things are getting fuzzy for me on the intellivision...  :dizzy:
I hope when CCM is playing his favorite game and he's about to hit a new high score, his power goes out.

That controller was great.  It took a little to get used to it, but after a couple of games, it was great to play with.  Those that had an Intellivision got really good at them and guys that didn't have that system always struggled to get comfortable with it.

They had overlays that you could slide in to know what button did what.  I used them at first but found it felt better to use them without putting the overlays in.  I still have a pair of original controllers hooked up to a PC for playing with an emulator.

The standard controller that came with the virtual boy was rather horrid. It was good if you were a lefty though... Its like 2 dongs in the palms of your hands. I can't really say if thats true, I've only ever had one dong in my hand at any one time. :laugh2:
