32" CRT Monitor for Vertical Cab?
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:47:49 pm »
I've seen some pretty awesome vertical cabs with big monitors around here. I found a 32" CRT VGA computer monitor on my local CL for only $10 and the first thought that came to mind was to make a vertical cab with it. But I'm wondering if 32" might be too big for vertical games? Those with big monitor vertical cabs, what size of monitor is in your cab? I'm on the fence about using this for either a shooter cab or a vertical cab (but leaning towards vertical). Suggestions?

Thanks.

I would say go for it. I would think the same thing to make a vertical cab if I had that monitor :applaud:

Damn Malenko, way to fill a hole! Did you have any issues with the neck sticking out past the back of the cab?

32" VGA CRT?? I can't imagine the cap on that thing. Where did you find that? From a decommissioned electric chair??

let me guess, a gateway one? I have a 27" gateway one I'm just waiting to build a cab around (It wouldn't fit horizontally in my simpsons fighter shell).

I don't know what kind it is, I'll be picking it up tomorrow morning. Here's the ---smurfy--- CL pic.

Does look like a Gateway after a quick google.

I would call that the 32" gateway destination crt monitor from a circa y2k home theater setup, I love my 27" one but I do envy your 32"

Nice to know this will fit in a 25" Midway cab with minimal alterations. Thanks guys!

As long as the 32" fits, it should be pretty cool.
On my project (which I need to get in gear on) is with a 27" vertical monitor and it looks best to not have all of the games completely fill the screen.

in my opinion any screen bigger than 25 inch is completley nonsens for a vertikal setup , no matter what style the cab is . the only cabinets providing accurate distance between gamer and 30 inch +x  screens are showcases . but why in gods name would anyone play verti on a showcase !? 29 inch candy cabinets in vertikal mode are highly uncomfortable , no matter if its lowres or vga . sometimes the bigger is better mentality makes me laugh .

I don't really know what you mean by accurate distance between the screen and the gamer. I've always liked being a bit close to the screen. I'm typing this on a 52" tv from about 3-4 feet away.

Broken Cab + old CRT = working cab

I dont see anything wrong with dropping $10 on a big ass display.  All the games are VERY playable on my MAME cab, and the horizontal games are abou the same as a 25" horizontal monitor.

Picked it up this morning. It is a Gateway 2000 Destination DL31-1. I guess technically it is a 31" monitor, viewable size is 31.4". This thing is HEAVY, holy cow. Maximum resolution is 800x600, but it looks great. Stashed it away in storage, it's so heavy I don't want to build a cab with it until after we buy our next house in a couple years. It will be nice hooking straight up to the monitor with VGA, with no need for any adapters or special video cards. Probably would have passed on this if I hadn't seen Malenko's KI2 (very nice BTW). Now to keep my eyes peeled for a deal on an empty Midway cab...

32" is not too big... but your cab design is absolutely key, and you have to have the space for it. It is going to be significantly larger than most cabs.

That said, I had that same monitor model in my first cab (http://quarterheaven.livejournal.com/) and if I were you I wouldn't bother attempting vertical orientation.  Vert games looked great on that monitor, and were definitely big enough to be playable (I don't remember the exact measure, but it was somewhere in the neighborhood of 22-25" vertical monitor equivalent.)  I wouldn't even recommend removing the outer shell unless you're a really good metal-worker and you can build a custom framework to handle the weight.  At a legitimate 120+ lbs by itself, that tube is a beast.

But hey, if you REALLY LOVE vert games, go for it!

(And if you're in the NYC area and decide you don't want it... I'd love to take that off your hands! Keep me in mind. I miss my old cab.)  ;D

umm no.. every vertical candy has a 27" (but they call it a 29" cuz I think they measure all the way out to the side of the tube, outside the visible screen area) monitor. And they are ideal for those types of games.

Exactly. In fact when I see people tating their 16" monitors and playing bullet hell shooters on it I wonder how they can do so well because everything is so tiny. Candy cabs have the perfect screen size at 27 inches.

29 inch vertikal gaming on candy cabs suck compared to a kickass 25 inch candy . no matter if its vga or 15 k , a crappy weiya , samsung or a highly praised nanao screen .

I haven't played on a 25" for a long time, so I can't say what's better, but I love my 29" (or 27", depending on where in the world you are) Candy cabinets to death. Even my old games, like Rygar looks great on it. NANAO MS9 for the win.

Also, when selecting the resolution to run on that 32", do yourself a favor and pick the one that gives you the best geometry rather than higher resolution. I had a 31kHz screen in my old Wei Ya cabinet and unless I ran it in 480p I had terrible geometry issues. No 15kHz joy for me, so I sold it.
