Will this LCD panel work?
« on: April 15, 2011, 12:39:42 pm »
Would this be a good LCD to use in a cab?

http://www.amazon.com/VIZIO-M260VA-26-Inch-Class-RazorLED/dp/B003LL17HK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1302885072&sr=8-1

My mame cabinet is a old Killer Instinct midway cabinet similar to the Mortal Kombat cabinets.  I have about 25.5" inches of width to play with so it looks like it might just fit.

I am considering this option because I am having problems outputting video to my 27" Toshiba CRT TV that I currently have in there.  Its just blown up all of sudden and I'm getting tired of F'n with it.  I want a simple, no hassle monitor going forward.

My only fear with this display is will it be similar to my 27" CRT in terms of size of display on horizontal and vertical games?  Thats one of the great things with my current setup but damn getting a picture at all now is driving me nuts.  I could be comfortable with an inch or so loss on either horizontal or vertical games if it provides the no hassle experience I'm looking for.

It will be smaller for both horizontal and vertical games.  Height wise, its right about the same as a 21 inch CRT.

This site always seemed to help me with screen sizes.

(beware, nerd math ahead!)
Width-wise the 16:9 26" LCD would be verrrry slightly larger (like an inch) than the 27" 4:3
For the same height as a 27" CRT in 16:9 LCD format, you would need a 33" screen. No problem, right? hehe :P Only about 200-300 dollars (for a weird mysterious brand), but I'm absolutely certain that wouldn't fit in any standard sized upright cab. It would have to be a showcase. For a 16:10 LCD PC monitor it would only have to be 30" (Still not fitting plus way more expensive than a 16:9 TV)
I have a 26" LCD in my cab, and I like it. It fits perfectly in the Happ 16:9 bezel, and I think it looks great. I don't at all feel like it's too small.

I'm in a similar boat. I have a very nice 25" Toshiba flat tube connected via component and was curious about an LCD, but it would decrease my viewing size considerably at the max that would fit for me, which is 26"

Blehhh it's too early here for all this math, but with a 26" width on your cab, (subtracting an inch or so from either side to fit, you could get a 27(.5)" 16:9 LCD in there.

Thinking my problem was my Nvidia videocard going apeshit on me, I purchased a new Radeon HD 4550 videocard over the weekend and installed it.  Pretty much same problem as I had with my Nvidia card.  However, I was using the Mini din dongle that came with my Nvidia card on the Radeon card.  So I've ordered the proper ATI dongle to see if this fixes my problem.  If it doesnt, I'll be saying goodbye to my perfectly good 27" Toshiba TV and hello to a new, smaller LCD.  At least VP will look more crisp.

I forgot to mention that any LCD TVs used (inside of a cab) would have to be even smaller in screen size, because they usually have a bunch of crap built into the sides. (speakers, frames..)i

What about this one?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+27%22+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LED-LCD+HD+Monitor+-+Black/1507078.p?id=1218264281476&skuId=1507078&st=16:10 lcd&cp=4&lp=13

The width dimensions listed fall just under the width of my cabinet.  How big of a deal is refresh rate for Mame?  This has the lower 60 refresh rate.

The size should be fine, and the refresh rate isn't very important. There isn't anything in mame (that I know of) that could possibly need more that that refresh rate. Keep in mind that depending on your cab setup (angle/pre existing bezel?) LCD can be a real pain to set up. I know mine was!

I have a homemade bezel which I would simply discard.  I dont envision that preparing a new bezel would be problematic.  It has to be easier than my current one.  Just use some velcro and black foamboard and your good to go.  I also have a tinted glass that helps hide imperfections.

I was thinking about just running a 2x4 across the area and connecting the LCD to that using the standard VESA wall mount.

That's almost exactly what I did, except I had a pre-existing bezel (from happ, as mentioned). So, it was actually a huge hassle to get the angle right for it to line up. It wasn't a big deal when it was just on a stand, but it would wobble around during vigorous play, so I had to mount it. Had to figure out angles, proper heights.. had to prop it up so it would stay in place while it was mounted. I'm just glad it ended up turning out alright!

This one actually looks like a better option than the Asus I linked previously.

Looks like its a 16:10 ratio

Well it's done I purchased the LG 2600 something or other blanka recommended in a nov 10 post.   It's a 26" 16:10 display.  Hopefully I'm happy with it.

That's just about the same as mine. I think it looks great with the Happ bezel. It cuts off the top and bottom a little bit, but most games in mame have an area on the top and bottom that is not filled in, so it mostly makes it feel more full screen.
