How do you tell if the next or latest version will break my ROMS.
I've got two machines:
One vertical cab and uses the 0.115MAME version with highscore diff patched (not changing as it works)
One horizontal cab and uses 0.81MAME version (I just can't get any other new MAME version to play my street fighter roms)

Is there an audit utility i'm missing? I don't suppose i'm missing much anyway by getting the newest version?

My art is always free for you to download and modify as you see fit...
Why?... because I could never find any art I loved on the net. So I played around with Photoshop and wish to share it with the arcade community.

:laugh2:

Bu buh buh but it's about preserving old pcbs or some such nonsense.

Who cares?  Final burn alpha is the new hotness

I sincerely hope you are kidding.  FBA only supports about 700 games... Games that have been in MAME and have been working PERFECTLY for YEARS.  Yes FBA the emulator in which they literally look at the drivers from mame and use them to add new games, is superior to the emulator that it swipes it's code from.  That's the silliest thing I've ever heard.  Next you'll tell me that KRAZY KONG is better than Donkey Kong.

Also it's an irrelevant point because classics just don't "break" in MAME.  They don't, it's a myth.  Been using mame almost from the start and there might have been 3 or 4 times in it's history when some games that had stable drivers "broke".  It was usually due to a bug after some major core re-write and the games in question were fixed within a "u" build.  When you are dealing with an emulator that supports over 5,000 games, that sort of thing tends to happen once in a blue moon.

Errr, no it doesn't, MameUI is a different matter.

"2011.04.04 Warning: MameUI .142 is being released but it is still taking 1.2GB in memory when loaded, this is compared to 215MB of .141.
The x86 version may crash out if used w/out sufficient resources.  The DEVs continue to investigate."

I also still at mame around .110 and no need to update (games I want works, but Donkey Kong is slow, due sound). Mame big issue is also clutter and its being using more ram also need more power.

So mame is not allready the best emulator. FinalBurn is a good emulator too, and is pretty fast.

But all in all, I guess both is right this time.

Support for SW Yoke is still broken  :(  I get erratic movement.  Works fine in 106, not 138 and beyond, not sure about other versions.

It's not broken, it's more accurate.  Enjoy your mah jong.

At least they have their priorities straight  ;D - maybe one day I'll look at the code and fix it myself....maybe
For now, my FE is configured to launch 106 for starwars; hacky, but it works

That reminds me, I need to filter out all non-mahjong games in FE, who needs all that retro-gaming ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- anyway, it's all too accurate  :laugh2:

The problem is MAMEUI has no devs who can program, basically it's only the guy who updates the website left, they've been leaning on MESSDev to fix their bugs for the past few years but MESSDev aren't really interested in doing this.

Unless somebody pops up and fixes the issues I have a feeling you won't be seeing any new (stable) MAMEUI builds from this point forward.

So all this being said, what is the latest stable version of MAME + MAMEUI that is best for the classic games?  Maybe I should just stop upgrading now.

It's a matter of taste (and your system specs etc.), but the latest command line version should always be fine.

If you don't like DK discrete sounds, use an older version

If your PC spec is awful, use a much older version.

If you have specific hardware which doesn't seem to respond well with current versions, try other versions.

If you're running a modern OS, don't try and run old versions, they'll probably explode in your face ;-)

Bugs will creep in, and be fixed all the time, there is no definitive, 'perfect' version, not even the old ones, they have their own bugs, own incompatibilities etc.

It's really just a case of 'try things, and see what works best for you'  Start with the newest, work back.

Or use a front end that will let you run different versions for different games. :)

To that end, has anyone ever compiled a table/mapping of game vs. best MAME version to play it in? Seems like a PITA, and most many (most?) may not matter, but would be excellent to have...

Nobody can, the reasons people have for picking one version over another are more often than not subjective.

A neat option, would be to toggle sample use on/off.

Also it's an irrelevant point because classics just don't "break" in MAME.  They don't, it's a myth.

Nor do roms, but...paraphrasing RB....the proles just want it to work, and gross language comes easily in such case.
