It's a matter of taste (and your system specs etc.), but the latest command line version should always be fine.
If you don't like DK discrete sounds, use an older version
If your PC spec is awful, use a much older version.
If you have specific hardware which doesn't seem to respond well with current versions, try other versions.
If you're running a modern OS, don't try and run old versions, they'll probably explode in your face ;-)
Bugs will creep in, and be fixed all the time, there is no definitive, 'perfect' version, not even the old ones, they have their own bugs, own incompatibilities etc.
It's really just a case of 'try things, and see what works best for you' Start with the newest, work back.
