I bought a Dremel

Following the build threads, everybody is always going on about how much they love their Dremels. They're all, "I carved my arcade cabinet from scratch using my Dremel" or "Luckily I had my dremel and I was able to fashion a rudimentary lathe" and "this man's appendix was about to burst, but fortunately I had my Dremel". So I bought one for myself. I have to say, it's pretty cool. So far my favorite accessory is the one for branding cattle. But it's been pretty convenient to use in place of a jigsaw, too.

Yeah. Safety first.

Keep the heads on the matches then you can dispose of the cab easily when you no longer want it or alternatively, light the cab at a good moment to enhance the realism of a game.

I think that's an argument in favor of the dremel.  If you'd been using a real tool you'd have cut the thing clean off.

I had a Dremel bit explode as a kid. The shrapnel imbedded itself into the table, wall and my safety glasses. I think the shrapnel is still in the wall, I never removed it.

it's a knockoff of someone else's tool that recently went off patent (can't remember what) and it's a handy tool.  Great for making flush cuts in confined spaces.

On a serious note I've busted plenty of the fine cutting discs which shatter and fly off in every direction, I never use it without safety glasses.

I know that tool. The original is German made or some such, right? Has it been that long? I thought it was only on the market for <10 years. The original is insane expensive too. Something like six easy payments of $49.95+S&H.

Yeah, I think my dad just got me those glasses. IIRC, they were these soft squishy frames with a semi-hard lens. I didn't particularly like wearing them (still don't) because they tend to fog up in the cold. I like my other glasses that look more like driving lenses. Not quite as safe, but almost zero chance of fogging.

Personally, I dont care for Dremel.  I only use it as a last resort, for ultra fine work.

 You can double up on those cutting discs to help keep them from bursting apart.
Might take a little longer to cut due to the thickness... but I really dont like exploding discs at 30,000 rpms.

 They are much better, but 10x as expensive, and dont last very long.

 In reality, its far better & cheaper to use an alternative to the dremel when cutting metal.. such as a drill/press+large fiberglass wheel, grinder, metal cutting bandsaw..etc.

I tried it with a plasma cutter.  Equally tough.

Really, the dremel is excellent at what it's made for.  Tiny work.  If you're doing things that are causing discs to explode, rethink the tool in use.

It is true that the cheap disc cutters break easily.  It's like rigid sandpaper, though, so don't expect much out of it.  Leaning a little too hard on it breaks it.  Giving it too much angle breaks it.  Catching a burr on the workpiece breaks it.  That's why they come in quantity.

After watching Manny Malholtra take a puck in the eye, I wear safety goggles all the time.

The Dremel was excellent carving out the new marquee on my arcade cabinet. It took a little while to get the hang of it. I find it very useful for smaller jobs, where I don't want to bother getting out a larger, better tool.

My kit has a gazillion attachments. I do not know what half of them do. It's great that they color coded the sandpaper/grinding attachments, but it would have been even better if the book wasn't in black and white. It will take me a while to sort out which attachments are most useful for what purpose. In the meantime, I think I found an attachment for writing forum posts, but it isn't working very well. Maybe it's not compatible with my monitor? All I get is a lot of scratches and smoke.

Yeah you can double up those fragile cutting discs as Xiaou2 says, less shattering.  Sometimes the stronger reinforced cutting wheels are too big for the job.  I like using mine with the flexible extension for more control.  They have their uses, somewhere in my current project I used mine to cut off all these screw ends on the inside of panels I'd made, worked a treat.  I'm not very impressed with the router bits which are really pricey and messy to use, but then I don't use the special little jig you're meant to use with them either.

I think I found an attachment for writing forum posts, but it isn't working very well. Maybe it's not compatible with my monitor? All I get is a lot of scratches and smoke.

That will just be a driver issue, you need to download the latest one compatible with your OS
