Wood price check--1/2'' MDF
« on: March 29, 2011, 12:15:40 pm »
My local Home Depot charges $22.84 a sheet. Lowes doesnt even sell 1/2" MDF only the 3/4".

If anyone here built a cab out of 1/2" MDF is that about what you paid? Just interested to hear.

1/2 inch is fine, as long as you have some way tho treat the edge (as in T Molding).  Most T Molding is for 3/4 inch stock, but there are some choices in 1/2 or 5/8.  That is a common price.

Mine is 12mm for 90%. Guess it's 15 euro/sheet here.
And it is sturdy. 100% glue, no screws, lamello-connections used though.
The door on the back is the only 18mm part.

N00b question, why do the edges need to be treated?

While certainly not an expert on the subject...

The pressed layers of wood (more like paper) are quite easily damaged/frayed when they are exposed.  T-Molding on the edges will prevent the wear and tear that would eventually lead to the failure of the piece of MDF.

What edges? T-molded edges? Nobody leaves them plain MDF!
With a correct paint job or laminate, you can't tell the difference between edge and face.

Didn't see the price of mdf, but I did see the price of cabinet grade 3/4" plywood ($26.97). Caught me off guard as I spent $40/sheet about a month ago. I think 3/4" MDF was around 24-25 though. This was at home depot, though I don't know if sales like this are on a store to store basis or not.
