Sucker Punch
« on: March 26, 2011, 03:15:30 am »
Me and some guy friends went to this movie for a bit of a guy's night out...

Can't wait to hear Danny tear into this POS flick. Not that I had high expectations for something with such a stellar title, but come ON!

The only decent part about the whole movie was maybe the one fight scene at the start, against the 3 samurai. Every other fight scene pretty much was a rehash of the same thing. I didn't expect much going into the movie with a name like sucker punch, but I think the only sucker punch involved was to my wallet. I was just kind of disappointed. I went in with low expectations, thinking maybe the movie could surprise me, but nothing. Every time the protagonist was about to put on a show, the movie cut into a parallelism that felt more like a cock-block than an actual decent fight scene. The acting didn't pull me in at all, either.

Oh, the steam-punk zombies perhaps could have turned a couple heads and got a few ooohs and aaahhhhs from a couple members here!

It was a solid 6/10 at best. Maybe if it shows up on netflix I'd watch it again, but I wouldn't ever pay tangible moneys to see it again!

This looked stupid from the commercials.  Another Horrible CGI movie with no/stupid plot, actors that probably cant do anything near "convincing" martial arts.  Of course, even if there was convincing arts.. why bother when its against a bunch of horrible looking CGI + dizzying camera pans?

What I dont understand is why are you people paying to see this crap, and why are you wasting like 4hrs of your life partaking in it?

If everyone stopped paying to see this crap, Maybe they would get a clue and make some good movies.  I know its a long shot, cause there are so few movies that are worthy these days... but hey, its worth a shot.  Plus... it will save you $12 + gas money + any other expenses.

I know that as a kid in school, you probably want to see anything just to say you saw it..  but wake up, its not worth it.  Save it and put the money towards something known to be worthy.

This movie is typical Zombie fodder. Aimed at the young audience with money burning in their pockets, trying for the popular angle, pure gimmick and nothing of quality to deliver.

Zack Snyder directed this (300,Watchmen, Dawn of the Dead) so everyone was expecting it to be semi-decent, but WB actually cut some of his budget for the new Superman flick, because this film did SO BAD. Same with that Owl movie... Im expecting the new superman to suck, which is a bummer, because I love superman as a character.
Pictures are overrated anyway.

First off, 4 Hours?
Sucker Punch (2011) - PG_13  109 min
You watching it twice?
I wont even bother to comment on your "omg the actors dont know karate!" comment.

I had planned to see this until they dropped the rating to PG-13. Its not that I wanted to see TITTAHS *shudder* but when its an alleged martial arts flick, you do wanna see some violence. Also, it sounds like you're reviewing this flick without having actually seen it, how do you know its fodder?

Im gonna go watch Scott Pilgrim again.

WIN?

2 hour movie + 2 hour download?

My favorite theater is only about 5 miles away and costs $3.25 per ticket in the afternoon.  That's cheaper than blockbuster or pay-per-view around here.

take me 45 minutes to get to a nice theater around here. and I dont drive(yet). usually I pay for one and watch 2. its perfectly allowed too. says "no pass". basically you pay for 1 ticket and watch anything you want. $12.50 for 2(or more) is a good deal.

downloading doesnt take 2 hours. I could get R5 and dvdrips in less than 10 minutes. my internet is gangster like that :burgerking:

As a group of 20-somethings, we guys went into the flick to be entertained, not educated. It's not that we went in expecting to see a movie and "woooaaahhhh" the entire time. We went into it looking for a couple hours of entertainment, and it provided our money's worth in follow-up conversation, as well as a night we can always reflect on. Besides, it seemed to spawn decent thread here, I'd say.

Not ripped off by the movie, we got what we paid for, and what we were expecting out of it. It could have been a better movie, yes, will I pay to see it again? No. I feel the overall experience was worth our money.

Stopped reading when it mentioned PART II: FEMINISM FOR DUDES....

If it was possible, I want to see the movie even less now.

I dunno... I get that Alice in Wonderland (with Depp) vibe from it. I have that movie on DVD and no matter how many times I attempt to watch it, I can't make it past the first thirty or forty minutes of it. I get bored. I get up and go to the kitchen for a sandwich. I take a nice long ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on the loo. I look at pron on the internet. I return to the movie hoping it's already over.

I'm not sure what's missing but those movies simply don't grab my attention.

. . . you're reviewing this flick without having actually seen it, how do you know its fodder?

This makes my skin crawl.  I refuse to believe that anybody actually lives their life this way.  I don't believe it's even possible, let alone that anyone would choose to do something so masochistic.  However, if I'm wrong and you're being sincere, here are a few concepts that you might want to familiarize yourself with:

- Deduction
- Extrapolation
- Evidence: trailers, reviews, word-of-mouth, track-record, marketing, basic plot (i.e. this is a movie about PG-13 sex kittens karate kicking and gunning their way out of the bad guy's clutches -- you know that much going in)
- Probabilities

Also, mortality . . . I know it's cliche, but time's valuable.  You only have so much of it.

Let me put this into terms that are easy to understand.  What if a random homeless guy asked you if you wanted to lick his back?  Would you do it?  Cos, like, how do you know it wouldn't be awesome?  Have you ever tried it?  How do you know that lava will burn you?  I mean, you've been burned by fire before.  And hot pans.  But maybe you should put your hand in lava just to be sure.  God knows you can't trust what other people tell you about it, or even your own instincts based on an entire life's worth of experiences.

:soapbox:

Awww shucks shmokes, that wall of text for me?. Heres what I was getting at:  Xouche2 reviews EVERYTHING, from ultimarc buttons(well all their products) to movies without having actually seen or used them; a point you seem to be glossing over. My post had little to do with the movie (which I have no interest in, hence the Scott Pilgrim remark) and more with how he can do so much reviewing with so little seeing/using.

kk thnx bai

PS:I know what your getting at, I feel I have to reply to that as well. There's nothing wrong with not going to see a movie because it gets bad reviews; its another thing to give it bad reviews because it got bad reviews and not have seen it.

In fact, armed with good mechanical knowledge, ability, experience, ect, I have a much high percentage of being dead-on than to review a movie Ive never seen.

Mechanics & Physics dont change.  If you understand them, and as long as you account for all the variables... you can know to a high degree of accuracy, the end output, without even laying a finger on the device.

Also, how could anybody see the previews for Owl and even entertain the possibility that it might be good?

Also, how could anybody see the previews for Owl and even entertain the possibility that it might be good?

Well...it's obviously the compelling movie title they gave it...I mean, its not just about guardians, its about a legend of guardians, that's like double awesome. It WHO are these legendard guardians? They are fickin' owls man! Owls of Ga hoole! Hell yeah! These have to be like super-owls or something. Like laser beam hooting powers and super magic nocturnal mouse snatching skills. I bet they even know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop.

OK...nevermind, I don't even know what would compel someone to watch even the previews, other than knowing Zack Snyder is directing....but I hear that the movie has zero zombie spartan owls.

But the thing is, even if the movie were a masterpiece, the previews made it look SOOOOOOOOOO awful.  Like OMG awful.
