Defender controls
« on: March 09, 2011, 12:50:52 pm »
Hey all,

I am struggling to find a good setup for Defender. My control panel has a standard "Street Fighter" style button layout (6 buttons arranged in 2 rows of three). Button 1 is on the top row closest to the joystick with button 4 under it.

Can anyone suggest a good control configuration in MAME to make Defender a little more playable?

Thanks in advance

The only thing I can suggest is to forget about Hyperspace button for now as it's the least useful in the game. Reverse needs to be the most comfortable button to the joystick for your thumb. Then two buttons alongside each other for thrust and fire. I tend to prefer the fire button being on the left and thrust on the right (it was other way round on the arcade machine) because I personally find firing with the middle finger to be a bit painful after a while.

On the arcade machine the joystick was set quite low down. If you have a standard joystick height then you are going to be reaching out to the reverse button with your thumb making it more difficult. Whatever you do is going to be a compromise.

My general two/three-button set-up is a triangle:

top middle = fire
bottom left = jump/bombs/thrust
bottom right = hyperspace/shield/extra

With Defender:

bottom right = smart bombs
top left (yes, right hand) = reverse

With Stargate, inviso (which I *never* use) = top right.

I have a 4 button setup and I really can't find a decent config.  I'd love to find a hacked rom that would allow combined reverse and thrust so I could push the direction I want to go on the joystick

Stargate is my favorite game of all time and I suffered as you are now with how to control the game in mame. This really inspired me to eventually find and buy a real Stargate which I made into a dedicated mame until I could restore the game to original. Stargate is just one of those games where you need the real controls to play really well. My HS is 188,000, decent but not astronomical. Mame is just about perfect in terms of gameplay, dead on. I think saltbreeze on klov has a HS in the millions.

Does it 'reverse' only when the stick is pointed back in the other direction?

Yes.  It accesses a memory location for proper control.
