Dreamcast paraphernalia, what would you call it/any more pics?
« on: February 05, 2011, 11:00:23 pm »
I'm going to call it a display stand for now since I don't know what most people would call it.  :P

I was looking back at the first issue of the Official Sega Dreamcast magazine and saw the first attached picture on pg 6.  I have never seen one of those display stands before.  I kinda like the way they look (from what I can see) and think they would be a good inspiration for a DC cab.  I hope to someday build whatever it is that I can come up with but for now it's just having a little fun with Sketchup.

Anyways...  I can't seem to find any more pictures of the display and I was hoping the collective would have better luck.   I will be sure to post whatever I come up with and would surely not mind if someone were to build one based on what I come up with if that's any incentive.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

In a weird way, that's actually kind of neat. PVC pipe would probably kind of suck, might be better with steel pipe. Is it possible to get steel pipe in that diameter?

I google'd "Dreamcast Kiosk" and got quite a few images that look somewhat similar to your picture.  Not exact though.   You may try going that route to see better pictures.

I used to have a different Dreamcast kiosk.  I would be hard pressed to come up with a less comfortable way to play console games than that kiosk.  Standing up, controller at your waist, no cord, 13" TV behind a scratched up plexi shield.  Erf.

Judging by that photo and your sketchup, you're on track for build a naomi upright cab.

Yup... consoles are meant to be played on your couch... period.  Been here for over 10 years, you'd think I wouldn't have to say it anymore. ;)

I'm going to assume you're referring to using a console controller standing up in front of kiosk because the DC has a plethora of direct or near direct ports of arcade games which is precisely why I want to build an arcade cab around one.

Not really.   The DC has a lot of arcade ports sure, but very few that aren't available on the pc, other consoles or via emulators.  Also many of then require speciality controls or a rotated monitor to play them to their fullest.   I suppose if you like bullet hell games then it would be worth it to make an arcade cab for it, but in all honesty there might be 5 arcade ports on the DC that work well with a digital joystick and buttons and that isn't already playable on a modest pc via mame or another emulator.

Don't get me wrong, I like the DC, I have a DC... but it's not all that in this day and age.  I think it really depends upon your budget.  You can spend upwards of 100 bucks on the cabinet alone, at which point it seems silly to put a puny dc in there.  If you are going for a cheap cab then it's a way to go, but be warned... the non-arcade ports won't play well on an arcade cab and the list of arcade ports with digitial controls is smaller than you think.

Pffft...hit a score of almost 400,000,000 on PFX2's Spiderman Table last night standing in front of a self-built pinball controller 3 feet from my 65" plasma.  Yeah, my feet were tired after standing there for an hour, but I would never have been able to do that sitting on the couch.

Some games are meant to be played standing up, regardless of the platform they are on.  And sometimes even those which aren't just play better that way.  But probably not with the original controller, tethered in some unnatural location away from where you would normally want to hold it.  Doesn't mean the idea is bad, just that one could probably improve it and still get the same desired effect.
