Touch Screen Games
« on: January 01, 2011, 02:57:11 pm »
Am I the only one that feels the vast majority of touch screen games suck ass?

Why is it that developers are literally handed a whole new user interface on a silver platter and 90% of these morons go and create some clone that was successful on a different platform (read: a platform that does not use a touch screen interface).

Case in point. I've demoed at least six or seven different RPGs and every single one of them suffer from the same crap interface. The developers felt it was necessary to code in a virtual joystick and buttons for controlling the interface. WTF is wrong with these people? Holy crap. RPGs and touch screen interfaces should literally be conjoined at the ---smurfing--- hips. Why torture the player to tapping a virtual joystick to scroll through a list of items to purchase in a store? Or using a joystick to walk around? I know my avatar is going to walk South and talk to that bimbo standing in front of the house. How difficult is it to "tap" the ---smurfette--- and have my avatar walk over there and talk?

And dialog with more than one page, why is it necessary to tap the hidden virtual button to go to the next page? This is an area that both Apple and Android have down pat. Just swipe the screen to scroll the text.

RPGs aren't the only ones to suffer from moronic translations but in my opinion there's no other genre, that should translate so well, falling flat on their face.

yeah, i hear what you are saying.. iv been playing "world of goo" that i got from the humble bundle donation drive last month.. anyhow.. that game suits it self perfect to touch screen. and it works great with a trackball.  them two interfaces work so much better with world of goo than just using the pc and a regular moue.  i really enjoy playing world of goo with the trackball.  speaking of touch screen..  dell released there 21" touch screen desktop model today for 300.00 bones.  when this was originally announce we all thought was gonna be like a grand!  I was rather shocked at 300.00  on the iphone/ipod ( i have a gen 2 ipod, lots of fun games to be had.. was gonna upgrade to a gen 4 ipod but when Steve put such a lousy camera in it.. decided ill wait for the next gen ipod..  ) game forum i made a joke about angry birds coming to the desktop pc soon. heh

i can see lots of uses for this monitor, maybe even work well in our hobbie and a jukebox just waiting to use it.

I agree with most of your points.  I wish that developers would make more touchscreen-friendly PC games that didn't require a keyboard at all - like even when you get a high score you could type on a virtual keyboard.  Touch screen games are simple fun for the most part and could work great on a jukebox with music playing in the background...

i saw this cab on ebay and thought this touch screen from dell would improve its function i think.

from what i get, this has little touch screen monitors along with the large on in the middle.. and the point of these little ones is to hold your hand.  now if you had the touch screen for the larger monitor.. you could grab the card and drag it across the table like you would in a real game.  just thinking out loud but seems to me a touch screen monitor could improve this gambling cab in a big way.   now, im not much into gambling, so i could be way off base.. i also agree be cool to have some of the games from the iphone/pod or even android ported to these..   there are some way cool games for the smart phones.. that use touch interface.. light years ahead of anything that will be for the desktop.  this monitor is one of the first affordable ones.. so who knows maybe this is the way technology will go..  all our monitors wil have the ability.. dose not mean we have to use it or even have it turned on.  time will tell i guess.

here is a link to that poker cab.
