Cab in Progress
« on: August 17, 2003, 05:54:22 pm »
I probably should have announced my cab when I first started it but I didn't.... :-\ ...so i'll announce it now before i finish.  :D

Basically it's gonna be a 4-Player cab, 4 8-ways with 8 buttons each and a few admin buttons (like 3 on the cp).

I've got some pictures up on my website if anyone wants to check it out.   ;D

I would post a pic here, but they are kinda big for some reason....

Well, the 8 buttons are very easy to explain.

Console 4 player games.

SNES had some awesome 4 player games (pretty much invented the multiplayer console games).  N64 was the king of 4 player game.  While N64 hasn't been emulated to the fullest extent, SNES has so I wanted to have my CP ready for it.

For me, SNES was the height of the gaming, and since that time it hasn't been the same :'(.  While my cab will have arcade games, most of the games on there are SNES games.

Eight buttons might be excessive to some, but come on, I've seen alot wierder things than that on CP's.  (Don't make me have to link to something cuz I will  ;D )

Dedicated four way....hmm...well since my CP is removable I can always create a second CP for that.  Like a said above SNES was more my golden age of gaming, so I had to keep my priorities straight.

8 buttons also gives me some flexibility to add newer consoles in the future if'n the emulators ever reach as good of state as the SNES/NES/Genesis/Mame emulators.

God, I loath music on websites. You managed to keep me for less than a second and a half.

You coulda pushed stop in that second and a half.  Did I not label the music control good enough  ;D

Plus that music is classic (Megaman, Castlevania, etc.)

I like your cabinet.

As far as I know even if you are planning on using this for some 4 player console action, I don't think there are many, if any 4 player games that use 8 buttons. :)

You mean the half a pause button that shows up? I guess you didn't, huh?

I can't recall there being a great deal of 4-player games for the SNES.  Matter of fact, I don't remember there being an 'official' four-player adapter either.  I could be wrong -- and I probably am, but most SNES games were 2-player.  But please let me know the 4p SNES games as I'm totally curious now...

With that said you could link the SNES's start button to the regular arcade start button (though I haven't a clue what to do with the select, perhaps use the unused button from the 'outer' players).

By the way, the embedded music, for some reason, crashed my Internet Explorer quite a few times (IE 6 is very sensitive - I wish I could actually 'downgrade' but no such luck) and made Netscape rather unpleasant.  That's probably an issue on my side since I saw no other complaints of that nature on this thread.

None of those games use more than 4 buttons. 8 is definately overkill for 3 and 4 plr positions.

Well except for the Maddens.

But you definately don't need a select button for every player (which is where I assume the 8 comes from - A,B,X,Y,L,R,Select,Start).

well he is using 8 buttons on player 3 and 4 in the hope of playing future console emulators... besides, it is his cabinet so if he wants 8 buttons then he shall have 8 buttons...

I am from the opposite school of thought though, I prefer minimalist cp's (standard streetfighter configs, no 4 players configs and small 19" cabs)  but if you have a good enuff reason to use that many buttons and joysticks then more power to ya  ;D

He can have 12 if he wants... I was just stuck in a ditch of curiousity trying to remember what games on the SNES were four player.  As for future systems....

PS/PS2 - 10 buttons (PS2's are mostly analog)
Dreamcast - 7 buttons (2 are analog)
Genesis - 7 buttons
N64 - 8 buttons
Xbox - 10 buttons (mostly analog, I think)
Gamecube - 8 buttons (plus a stick)

Yeah... he's more or less set.

I'm the opposite of minimalist - I just started work on a control panel that doubles as a Transformer.   ;)

What I am planning to do is this:

I have 6 buttons for P1 and P2 (well 7 if you include the neo geo button, but it doesnt really count since its a duplicate of another button).

So that is 6 buttons. Fine for SNES, Megadrive/Genesis etc. Now we have Playstation and N64. What I am going to do is this - remap the buttons so that I can use two extra buttons - ie Admin 1 and Coin (or P1 Start and coin etc). That way I get 8 buttons. The 2 extra buttons I can use for R2 and L2 for PS games, since not many games use them. Obviously for N64 though, more games use them - so I dont know what it will be like till i try it.

i have 6 per player. i said screw it and am getting usb adapters. there is no point in worrying about buttons when u cant do the stick.
the only console games that will be played on my CP are old digital only stuff, nothing with analog sticks or buttons.

Yeah thats the approach I took, six buttons for both player 1&2 and i have a couple of PS2 pads (hooked up via a USB adaptor) if player 3&4 are needed or if I need extra controls for certain console games.
