Rate my Donkey Kong CP artwork with 2 buttons!
« on: December 21, 2010, 03:17:12 pm »
So I was looking for Donkey Kong control panel artwork with two buttons, turned out there was nothing out there. I then got Inkscape and the vector artwork file (cheers to whoever pointed me in the right direction, but for the life of me I can't remember who it was) for the cp and got to work (Inkscape is a great program and really easy to handle even for an amateur like me), and this is what I came up with:

I uploaded a 300dpi-png in case anyone else wants to use it

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NNUUZZX0

I can also supply the vector file if anybody's interested. I'm building a Donkey Kong bartop which will be 32cm wide and I designed the artwork so that the edges of the start buttons lined up with the white boxes. I got two of these

http://www.arcadeshop.de/Seimitsu-Buttons-Seimitsu-PS-14-D-BK-wei%C3%9F_705.html

and I'm excited to see how it looks.

Anyway, what do you think of the cp? Any idea how I could improve it? I'd like to add some text to the second button as well but apart from "the gun" or "yer mum" i couldn't think of anything, so I'm open for any suggestions. Even extremely stupid ones  :afro:

Some variations are available at the arcade art library under Homebrew.

Do you want your arcade buttons that close to your joystick? I would put the player 1 and player 2 buttons in the middle of the CP and the action buttons on the right - like the arcade. At the very least, build a test layout to see how it works.

Very nice.  I'd agree with Leap and swap the start buttons with the action buttons.  No idea what to write above the second button since I don't know what it'll be used for.  How about 'Special' or 'Kapow!'?

I have mentioned Inkscape a couple of times now, so you may have gotten that from me.  It is a great open source alternative to AI for us amateurs.  Less powerful than AI but that's probably what makes it easier for us.

Sorry for replying so late... the Seimitsu I ordered hasn't even arrived yet and I'm starting to realize that the mounting plate won't fit in the limited space under the control panel. I'll have to make the cp a bit bigger, which will mean that the bezel will be a bit more slanted; but I think it will still look alright. We'll see.

Yeah, swapping the start and action buttons makes it a bit less authentic, but I easily get a cramped neck, so I like sticks and buttons roughly the same distance from the middle of the cp. Re the closeness of stick and buttons, I'm used to that; I use this "Japanese" setup on my shmup cab as well. But yes, trying it out via a test layout first is always a good idea. I did that and it works.

Well the second button will be used for many different two button games. I really like 'Kapow!', maybe I'll go with that...  for the Inkscape recommendation

Im been messing around with my own custom design of a DK panel...

definately swap though buttons around hitting the jump button once the stick is in going to be tricky.

on thing I noticed which I thought I would say though.. the instruction card from pictures on google.. the instruction card should have rounded corners too... not sure if its that important to you.. just thought I would meantion :)

I already swapped the two action buttons (btw it says SPECIAL on the left one now thanks SammyWI!). Nothing I can do about the instruction card as I have already sent the jpg to the printer... but thanks for letting me know! Be sure to post your DK panel design!
