WELLS-GARDNER 27" ARCADE UNIVERSAL MONITOR 27K5201
« on: December 10, 2010, 12:25:47 pm »
I'm thinking about buy a monitor from a guy which said he has a Wells-Gardner 27" 27K5201 monitor. It has been sitting on a shelf for 10 years and they are still in the boxes like new. Still have the plastic cover over the front class. He is asking 170 for the monitor and I was wondering if this would be a good deal. If I did buy this monitor can any of the veterians tell me how I would get this thing connected to my PC. I am looking to use it with mame, and any other emulator up to PSX. I think the specs said something about it only running in 25k mode or something like that.

Any information on this would be a great help. I just want to make sure I purchase something I'm going to like for a monitor in my arcade cabinet. currently I have a TV but it's just not the same.

Thanks,

ahofle

Can you post the specs?  If it's a 25khz monitor (EGA) it's definitely not a good candidate for emulation as it will be limited to 512x384 resolution.

I'm not sure about the specs but they guy did say it couldn't only do 25khz...The model is 27K5201 and the monitor part number is WGM2752-U0GS37F. I really can't find much information on this monitor.

If this monitor doesn't work out is there any monitors out there right now that I should be looking at for a decent price. I know a lot of the well gardner monitors are not available. I'm looking to play a lot of emulators on my cabinet but want the old CRT feel.

That's actually a good thing (it's probably a standard CGA arcade monitor).  If you can somehow find some specs on it, post them here.  If it's a 15khz monitor, that's definitely a good deal assuming it works.

To connect to a PC, you will need to hack a VGA cable (or buy a VGA breakout cable from ultimarc).  Use this guide to connect the appropriate wires to the monitor:
Then you'll either need to use Soft15khz to get low arcade resolutions, or buy an ArcadeVGA card from ultimarc.com.

Sorry I ment it can only do 25khz, I think.

I can't find any more specs on this monitor.

Do you know what is available to purchase now a days for a arcade monitor.

For anyone reading this and seeing that wiring diagram above, DO NOT CONNECT PIN 9 TO GROUND.  This pin used to be empty (and as such could be connected however you feel like it), but it's now used for +5V (it was never used for ground).  So, of you connect that pin to ground, you're shorting +5V to ground.  Some video cards have protection to keep this from being too big of a problem, but many don't.

if it can do 15hz ? You do all the emulation you want, run older games in progressive native res , up to 220 lines, ( work fine for most horizontal mame, nes, genesis, tg-16 ) and for snes and above, you can do 640x480, but it will be interlaced. ( personally , I can't stand interlaced.  )

but.. IMHO , 170$ is too much for a tube that only does 25hz . I just bought a used  tri-sync 27" kortek for 200$ shipped on ebay.  it can do 640x480 or 600x800 in progressive scan
