Eee PC

I've got a 1005HA Eee PC and I'm a bit mystified as to the malfunction. (Translation: I'm doing someone a favor and I'm going to see if I can fix this.)

The Eee PC can be plugged in and the battery indicator flashes. If I'm understanding the status indicator, the batter is at or below 10% charge. That's to be expected. The Eee tends to get stuffed in the bag when it's still in a standby state and it runs out of juice. Plugging the AC adapter in + flashing should == charging. I don't trust the laptop enough to leave it plugged in while I'm sleeping. However.... If I power on the PC, the battery indicator flashes (irregardless if it's plugged in or not) as it does above. The Power and HDD indicator lights go full bright. The Power switch and the touchpad switch are full bright. That's it. I don't get any other behavior out of this. Not even the screen lights up.

I figured maybe the LED bulb busted (even though it's awfully thin to have a bulb) and plugged in a monitor. I saw a flicker that I thought came from the Eee, but it's apparently some static on the monitor. I get the same behavior (on the monitor) when I plugged the monitor back into a powered down server.

That's it. No beeps. No POST. Nothing, zilch, nada. I get more out of my fiance when she has a headache.

Side note: I don't get any fan activity. I know this model does indeed have a fan as I've heard it operate when the Eee was actually running. However, I don't expect any fan activity as it's too cold right now. I don't believe the Eee "starts" the fan on power up then kills it like my other laptops but I don't recall if the Eee does this or not.

I really don't want to go through the long and involved process of pulling the stupid HDD out and figuring out if I have a compatible USB adapter for it. Not going through POST leads me to think it's not a HDD problem anyways. I'm kind of out of ideas on where I'm looking next.

Any suggestions?

I saw a similar problem on a HP pavillion.
Had to reset BIOS by removing battery for 30 minutes, then holding power button for 30 seconds, then plug in ac power (with battery still out), then it came on normally.
I think this has something to do with the video card on the pavillion, so it may not be the case for you, or may not fix your problem.

Thanks ill give it a shot tonight. Told the owner what was going on and she almost cried. Methinks she bonded a little too closely with the thing. Oh well.

should tell her about hibernate as oppose to standby when you are shoving it in a bag..

Tried it with a spare SD Micro in a USB adapter. It apparently didn't work except the fan spins up/down now. The battery light stopped flashing (most likely it's above 10% charge now that it's been plugged in for a while) That was a lot more than before. Tried to reset the BIOS as well and that failed too. What's interesting is that I noticed the HDD light isn't coming on at all. I didn't really think anything of it at first but now....

Interestingly, one of the BIOS updates addresses the exact symptoms I'm experiencing. Whether they're caused by the same problem, I haven't the foggiest.

I would like to try and hunt down on my other USB sticks with a status light and see if there actually any activity at all on the USB port or if the fan cycling is just a coincidence. Unfortunately, I think this one is a FAIL. I had two emergencies take out two days out of the four I had this Eee. So that was time lost and tonight I have to draft some important papers so that takes time away from this process.

I spoke with the owner and she seems to think it's still under warranty. So I'll hand the Eee back to her and she can, hopefully, get it repaired wherever she got it from.

Oh well. Back to drafting papers and building cabs.
