Saw it today, went in without any prejudice about what a Coen brothers flick should be (some of you folks should try that sometime) and loved it.

I tried that once with a Michael Bay flick (The Island) - I really wanted to like the movie based on the premise and was willing to set aside that it was a Bay movie and give it a chance.

Yeah - didn't work out so well  :dizzy:

It is a Coen brothers movie . . . to say that doesn't come with expectations is sort of absurd.  To say that you can go in without any prejudice about what a Coen brothers movie should be is equally absurd.  Once you know something you can't just voluntarily unknow it.  Expecting certain things from the Coen brothers is just as valid as expecting certain things from Michael Bay.  And they both tend to live up to expectations with about the same consistency.

And I understand that it was a book adaptation, but it was not as good as most of their other work (including No Country for Old Men, another book adaptation).  I don't really care why it wasn't as good as the others--whether it was because it was an adaptation of an inferior work or because they phoned it in or because they ran out of money.  I just care that it wasn't as good, for whatever reason.  With that said, the movie was still really good.  I liked it a lot.  I just don't really want to see it again.

---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- ... it is completely possible to go in without any expectation as to how the movie should be -- the same way that you should be able to look past any other prejudice to see things clearly.

You certainly don't have to and if you are disappointed because you were expecting something different, that is certainly valid. It doesn't negate the potential to make a conscious decision to avoid expectations based on past works.

I knew it was a Coen brothers movie -- I just chose what to expect out of it.

It was a great movie. It wasn't in the same camp as Burn After Reading, and that was a little disappointing.

Well done.

I agree. Just saw this tonight. My lack of prejudice comes from the fact I forgot who was directing it! That girl was brilliant. Totally pulled off that whole 'kid who's never had a chance to just be a kid' angle. I haven't read the book, but I was impressed with the realism, especially spoken. The speech, and the sentiment. For instance, the Texas Ranger saying to the girl something along the lines of 'I had the notion I would steal a kiss from you while I was watching you sleep'. In a modern context, how thoroughly disturbing, a 30 something year old man saying that to a 14 year old girl. But its the 1870's, and times much different to our own.

I think my only disappointment was that Josh Brolin didn't have a very big part to play, even though the whole story centres on his character.

4/5 Sharps Carbines (",)

my score for recent movies you may have seen:

5/5 - The Kings Speech, Michael Clayton, In Bruges, Gran Torino, Mary and Max

4.5/5 - Taken, Iron Man, Reign Over Me, Watchmen, The girl with the dragon tattoo

4/5 - True Grit, Traitor, Bedtime Stories, Sunshine, pineapple express

3.5/5 - 300, Max Payne, You dont mess with the Zohan, Yes Man

3/5 - That new Indiana Jones flick, Disturbia, That new TMNT flick,

2.5/5 - Angels and Demons

2/5 - The Love Guru. Note: My 2 is probably someone elses 1. Just leaving room for worse!

All I hear from the reviews is how she steals every scene she's in.  Maybe it's just me, but I personally grew tired of the whole 'look at how beyond my years I am!' thing pretty quickly.  Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a good movie, but it was mostly because of Jeff Bridge's character.
