Please help me decide definitively, what monitor do I need??
« on: September 15, 2010, 02:52:52 pm »
I have a mame cocktail cab currently laying in bits, which is a sad state of affairs. I really really need to get the issue of a monitor sorted out for it so have come here in desperation to find out 'exactly' what I need! :notworthy:
Here is my criteria for the monitor,
1) 19" (at a push 20" and I pull the image tighter)
2) For it to display 15khz properly. The games I'll be playing will all be from the 80's to early 90's, nothing newer than that.

Basically I want as authentic picture and experience as possible.

Now, the waters are slightly muddier in that I've already assembled a very small pc for use in cab. When I mean small I mean small enough that it won't fit any additional cards and outputs via its onboard video.. hence an avga card won't be usable currently. I could be pursuaded to ditch the pc though and house it in a chassis which will accomodate a card 'if' it's absolutely necessary. But I've been told that things such as tri-sync monitors exist which together with Soft-15khz might discount the need for a avga card?

So there you have it. Please offer me some advice on exactly what type of monitor I'm after!

I would get a 19" CGA monitor while you still can.  You can try Soft15khz with the onboard video and see what happens.  If it doesn't work, I would ditch the PC and get one that handles a supported card (or an AVGA).

Thanks for the reply ahofle.

I'm in the UK, would anyone suggest any places I could get a 19" arcade cga monitor?
