I picked up a used makvision 27" arcade monitor.

27"/29" MAKVISION Tri-Mode CRT Monitor. Happ Controls part no. 49-2715-00

It should be here in a couple days. I want to confirm it works out of the box. Is it possible to
hook computer set at 640x480 directly to the VGA port?

Will it work? Should I see a decent picture?

I am buying an arcadevga but it wont be here in time to verify the
monitor works before the return period expires.

Thanks,
Crayola

Yes, if it supports 31kHz you can hook it to your video card and run 640x480 just fine.

Edit: To be safe you should set your desktop to 640x480 60Hz beforehand using a PC monitor, and don't turn on the arcade monitor until after Windows loads, as your BIOS screens may be greater than 31kHz. I don't know that they are, but its good to be safe.

May I ask why it has to be 60hz?

May I ask why it has to be 60hz?

cause that's what it is, and that's what the monitor supports. trying to drive 75hz into it and you risk damage, not to mention it's hard on the eyes.  :dizzy:

most new ones are are 800x600 or greater now.. older than approx. 4 years are likely 640x480 and okay to display. some people have no issues with the bios screen (just displays garbled) but others insist it's damaging.  :dunno

I have the same monitor. Ours is the best of the best :)

It will support up to 1024x768 natively and has digital tuning so it will remember screen position for each different resolution you feed it.
