Xbox Pad Hack Question.

I am working on an Xbox mini cab and I will be hacking up an old duke with a bad cable.  I really would like to only have six button to play with in addition to back and start.  I was wondering how I would go about setting up a switch to change back and forth between using the black/white buttons and the triggers.
