I'm definitely a little confused. If you notice, when you first turned it on, the press A dialog didn't start flashing on the screen at all.
Just checked my own. When powering it on both with the Wiimote (but without pressing another button to actually forge the wireless connection and turn the Wiimote on) and the console power button, both methods resulted in the A button dialog blinking on the screen within a second or so.
Yours didn't do it at all. Which makes me think something was up with the console for whatever reason. Perhaps you "reset" something when you did what you did that helped make it work.
