airsofting responsibly
« on: June 01, 2010, 08:03:51 pm »
I play airsoft! HUzzah!. And yeah I don't wanna hear about how much more hardcore paintballing is. My gun shoots far and accurate and doesn't leave massive welts, an important step when playing with girlfriends and nephews.

So I am sick of sneaking around in bushes with my retarded orange cap over the gun giving me away, so I pulled out the spray paint and coloured it in. Then I got out my whole box of spray paints and proceeded to fancy up my entire arsenal.

Now one of my friends won't play with me because she's afraid that "cops are gonna come and shoot us". Up on a mountain deep in the forest off of a logging trail. Pshaw. I know painting my guns to look better [I'm in canada - guns are clear with a bright orange tip] is illegal, but out where I play [in my very large and private back yard] and up on a mountain, sometimes on an island not too far a kayaking trip away - there is nobody. I think it's fine.

Opinions? Before you rag on me for breaking the law, I bet you jaywalk and don't always come to a complete stop at stop signs.

Oh also I basically have a small arsenal and my friends usually use my stuff. So yeah it's a fair game we play.

That sounds much more responsible than painting orange tips on real guns!

Um . . . who cares?

BTW, comparing what you're doing to jaywalking is absurd.  If you're trying to persuade people, mentioning that will always have the opposite effect.  A #1 the two behaviors are not remotely comparable.  B #2, forget jaywalking, maybe I'm a serial killer and I also eat children.  That doesn't make what you are doing any more or less appropriate.  It's totally irrelevant.  What you are doing to your guns is right or wrong or somewhere in between regardless of how many people jaywalk or roll through stop signs.

So you ask for opinions, but say that anybody who disagrees is a hypocrite ?

Why bother asking in the first place ?

When did it become acceptable to take a noun, throw "in" or "ing" on the end of it, and use it as a verb?

Airsofting?  Clubing?  Hot tubin?

 :dunno

Is it truly that difficult to say "We're playing airsoft" or "Let's get naked and get in the hot tub?"

oh sorry i meant specifically on your opinion of my friend's decision to not play. I don't wanna hear about the law side of things, because I knew that when I pulled out the spray paint.

Um . . . who cares?

it's about as relevant as anything else in the everything else forum.

I don't think I have ever heard someone say "let's play paintball!" It's always been paintballing. At least around here.

I can honestly say I would have an extremely difficult time motivating myself to say that to you.

Ya gotta have some room in your usage for slang in informal speech or you will come off as totally insufferable.  I mean, are you saying that converting a noun into a verb in informal speech is something up with which you will not put?  You see . . . sometimes the right way of saying something just isn't the right way of saying it.

Bingo.

When I said, "Who cares?" I was responding to the fervor with which you were going on about it and then defending yourself in advance from some hypothetical adversary.  You didn't just come in and ask for an opinion.  You came in and dared us to get in your face about it.  And . . . just . . . who gives a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- when it comes to that?  You're making your guns marginally more dangerous to you and others, but it's just not enough for anybody here to get worked up over.  It's like coming in and daring us to take you to task for not wearing the strap when you play Wii bowling.

3) Arcade Nerd runs to other Arcade Nerds for support in criticizing actions of Girl

Is playing with toy guns really less nerdy than arcade games?  Thats a close one.  ;D

Is hot tubing anything like hot tubbing?  And isnt that the right way to say it? I thought adding ing to a noun worked almost all the time, I mean other then dropping the Y and andding ing, heh.

Shall we call it Xiaouing?  We really should verbify his name.  It's so cool 'cause it has 5 vowels in succession!

Those are verbs.  I'm not saying slang isn't acceptable either.  Simply asked when this became the norm to do.

So she doesnt want to play a game where people dress up and run around the woods pretending to shoot each other, with equipment meant to be less "ouchy" ?
and you REALLY want our opinion of why she doesnt want to play?

(A) Is it really against the law to paint your airsoft gun?  Sure... I can understand it being against the law for stores to SELL airsoft guns that look like real guns,  but if it is truly against the law to PAINT your OWN airsoft gun in Canada,  that tells me enough about that country to know I won't be visiting any time soon.

(B) If your friend won't play solely because she's worried that the cops will come out and shoot you... that gives me another reason to not want to visit Canada... because evidently the cops there are trigger happy?

(C) Tell your friend she's a ween and move along.

I see what you are talking about with painting the orange protectors a more cool color.

Painting your play gun barrel in the woods no one to see you point a real looking gun at another person except for the occasional deer,... and hunters and game wardens ... who have REAL guns and will most likely think they are doing the right thing by shooting "the guy who was sneaking up on the other guy with a gun."  Man that's cool!!!  :laugh2:  I can see it on the Darwin awards now.

I have an airsoft that's a replica of my real gun, I use it to practice shooting from the holster.  It has an orange piece of tape/plastic wrapped around the tip of the barrel.  I thought about peeling it off but then I also thought about someone breaking in my house in the middle of the night and mistaking it for my real gun or having someone mistaking my real gun for the airsoft.

There are no accidental shootings. Those tragedies are from irresponsible gun handling and storage, because the trigger of the gun needed to be purposefully pulled.

You’re being irresponsible, her not wanting to play cowboys and Indians with you is like me not wanting to ride in a car with a drunk driver.

Some people don’t mind taking those risks and that’s fine, if stupid people weren’t allowed to die stupidly there would be a lot more of them breeding.
