TV only has RGB but Video card has VGA, S-Video...now what?
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:41:03 pm »
So I found a used tv for a good price that would fit my cab perfectly but it doesnt have s-video at all and only uses rgb. Is there any way via a cable or hack that I can make this work?

So what about this VGA to RGB cable?

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B002BGIWNI/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Will this be okay from Arcade VGA card to the TV?

Why would you pick S-Video over RGB? Just curious...

RGB is much better than S-Video...S-Video is only a notch up from composite for bad picture quality...

Fortunately for you, "VGA" is "RGB".  All you need is a cable that will let you hook the two together and some software that will get your PC to output video at the appropriate scanrates.

The former I can't help you with because you haven't posted any further information.  Do you have BNCs for RGB inputs on your TV?  SCART?  Something else?

The latter is generally solved for most people by either an ArcadeVGA or Soft15kHz or a similar tool or driver hackery.  If you're not running Windows, then the answer is different.

Are you sure your TV has RGB video inputs?

Or do you mean YPbPr inputs?  aka Component Video.

If you have component video then I recommend you purchase an RGB > component video converter and use that.

If it is RGB then it is either going to be SCART, or BNC connectors and you'll need to buy the  correct cable for either one.

Agreed...either way RGB or Component, they are both better than S-Video...definitely no need to go down the S-Video path ;)

Couldn't they have used some other colors? Those bastard! They knew everyone would mixup Component and RGB :)

What kind of gfx card are you going to use? Most newer ones have Component Output either via the TV-Out Plug or the DVI (ATI Radeon 9k series)
I do all that stuff even without a Joystick ;)
