Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright's next film looks awesome. I've still yet to read the books for this:

Yeah, that "KO!" was great. Several games referenced in the trailer alone, so I can't imagine how crazy the movie will be.

Yep, it was filmed there, which is appropriate since it's a Canadian comic. Edgar blogged daily from the set.

When did the comic come out, because the plot sure sounds a lot like No More Heroes.

Scott Pilgrim predates No More Heroes. The first comic came out in 2004.

That puts a smile on my face.  It looks awesome, I love the director, I love that kid from Arrested Development (and a disproportionate number of really good movies).  And videogames.

bumping this up, Saw it opening night. LOVED it, it was everything I expected except the very very end.... I wouldnt have made the same choice.  Also, theres nothing after the credits except the Scott Pilgrim videogame sprite beating up "the end" for coins.

Saw it Saturday night and absolutely loved every bit of it. I've only read the first three books (which is where the differences between book and movie begin since the movie started production before the books were finished, kinda like how Kick-Ass did). I liked the way they condensed the story down and enjoyed the pacing/editing. Edgar Wright has been a favorite of mine since Spaced and Shaun of the Dead, and he does not disappoint here.

The music is great and there is plenty of geek fan service all over the place.

10/10

Total box office flop, too.

It was fighting for both the male (Expendables) and female (Eat Pray Love) crowds. Tough weekend to open.

Box office means nothing when discussing how good or bad a movie is.

So PBJ, Titantic is the best movie ever and your all time fave?

My GF wanted to see Scott Pilgrim more then Eat Gay Love, Ive heard good things about the expendables and all the shows were sold out.

It wasn't showing locally, so we had to drive two hours to OKC and two hours back, and it was totally worth it (especially because we ate at Earl's Rib Palace beforehand). ;D

I think its secretly Beaches, with Bette Midler.  I was just trying to think of the most successful box office movie (money wise) if thats his basis on what constitutes a great movie.

I actually yelled "thats ---smurfing--- awesome" when he was doing the Final Fantasy II Bass line in the beginning.

Translation for everyone else - a 2 hour drive in Oklahoma is nothing.  They're used to making longer ones all the time to Dallas to get their tattoos and abortions.

Tattoos have been legal in Oklahoma for quite a few years now.

My theater 15 minutes away didn't get it. The four hour (total) drive sucked no matter what, especially with all the construction going on in downtown OKC.

Can I mention Oklahoma just once without a stupid comment from you? We get it, you don't like Oklahoma. That's great. Now enjoy Texas. I agree, it IS a better state.

Blahahaha youre arguing that Texas is better than anywhere?  :laugh2: Im sorry but Texas sucks. Unless you compare it to Death Valley or maybe the 7th Circle of Hell.... Oh and Malenko that comment wont work anymore, remember? Avatar is the high grossing movie of all time...I thought it was kind of whack, but whatever. People now-a-days equate a good movie to flashy effects and the story takes a backseat. If Dances with wolves and Ferngully got drunk and had sex, 9 months later you would get Avatar. Anyway... I didnt know Edgar Wright directed Scott Pilgrim!!! I cant wait to see it then! The theatre I went to was sold out of Expendables, and Scott Pilgrim was too late of a showing cause my damn GF had to work early the next morning... ::)
Pictures are overrated anyway.

It's a genre flick aimed at a specific audience, debuting on a weekend where two big movies came out aimed at both sexes. Most people didn't have a clue what it was or just didn't care. I wasn't expecting huge numbers. It's the best Edgar Wright has managed to do, having both a film and a soundtrack in the top five.

It was just going back to the Texas v Oklahoma arguement. Granted, I havent been to Oklahoma, but I have been to Texas, lived out there for a few years for work, and I didnt like it much. At all actually. No big deal though, just a matter of preference. Didnt mean to offend anyone. You know us Californians...so PC  :lol

Haha I loved Kick Ass! Well, maybe shouldnt say love cause I hated the ending, but a lot of it was cool. Or the idea that a 11 year old girl could fire guns as well as she did, but whatever. Its a movie. The end just pissed me off but no biggie.  :dunno

Yeah, whats that Bruce Willis movie? Red something? It was at comic con but nobody could tell me what it was about, even the people at the damn booth...

Back to kick ass, I love how a comic nerd wrote that movie... So funny.  :laugh2:
Pictures are overrated anyway.

Loved Scott Pilgrim.

I was already geeking from being at Quakecon though, so that may have had something to do with it, but the movie was stellar in my opinion.  Michael Cera once again did great playing Michael Cera, which is a character I love.

Ive lived in Texas, its better then Delaware.

Avatar / Titantic equal parts suck to me.

Scott Pilgrim didnt have a comic book movie feel, it had more of a high school kids with a bigger budger feel. The underaged asian girl was hot, hotter then Ramona Flowers (cept her fight scene, that was tits)

HE KNOCKED THE HIGHLIGHTS OUT OF HER HAIR!

I thought he was far more lively than his typical role. I didn't see it as him playing the same character at all. He did a great job as Scott.

I thought he was far more lively than his typical role. I didn't see it as him playing the same character at all. He did a great job as Scott.

Cera has more range then people give him credit for. He was pretty damn good in Youth in Revolt too (he even made Jack Black almost tolerable in Year One as well).

And Ellen Wong is SMOKIN, but I have yellow fever pretty bad, so my view is very skewed.

Yes, he was great in Youth in Revolt. I love his Francois scenes.

And, yes, Ellen Wong is the hottest chick in the movie.

Oh, I bought the soundtrack to the movie while I was on lunch (and Kick-Ass, like I said I would). Listening to it now. Mostly pretty good.

Beck wrote most of the soundtrack, didn't he? Or was it just the Bob-ombs tracks he did?

George Michael Bluth (awkward kid), Paulie Bleeker (awkward high schooler), and Scott Pilgrim (less, but still awkward young adult) are all similar characters.

This isn't a knock on Cera, I'm not saying he doesn't have range, but his most popular roles are far more similar characters than they are different.  Hell, played all together you would think its was a documentary of Cera's life, each kid could have easily evolved into the next.

Paid to see it twice.  Went out and bought the soundtrack so I could bump Sex BOB-OMB! (Beck)  Having trouble finding the score though...  I must have the Universal 8-bit chiptune intro track!  Did  anyone else get the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World guitar pic keychain?  I went to a Century theater and they were giving them out to the first 500 people with movie ticket.  I was stoked because when everyone was shuffling out at the end of the movie I found 3 more on the floor!  I'm thinking about uploading a pic of the pic, because I can't find any online.

I thought the movie was entertaining; not my fav Edgar Wright movie (Shaun of the Dead wins that) but comparable to Hot Fuzz in entertainment value.

Although entertaining, it's one of the most geek centric movie I've seen in a while thus mass market expectations were hopefully put aside because it's just too much "out there".  I don't think they expected this low a total though but sometimes, these types of flicks really get their legs more once they hit home video so we'll see what happens then.

Best comment I can provide to support it?  I'd pay to see the sequel.

Yeah whats is this trilogy you speak of?  Im not sure which would be better, if they made more Matrix movies, or if Lucas finally made Episodes 1-3 of Star Wars.

Scott Pilgrim the Video Game is also pretty awesome if you're into side-scrolling brawlers. Very much like River City Ransom.

Nothin' wrong with the audio.  I love the Anamanaguchi sound-track! Those guys kick ass for 8bit/chip tunes.

I just finished the game this weekend. It was pretty rad! The artwork is sweet, Art Directed by Paul Robertson (ala Pirate Baby Cabana), the gameplay gets really good as you progress. Especially all the combo tricks and dash attacks you can get off. It's like River City Ransom updated.

I haven't watched the movie yet, I plan to eventually, but for now I'm just going off what was in the graphic novels. I really liked the story there, and am interested in seeing how much they changed it for the movie.

For 800 points, you cannot go wrong. My wife and I are about halfway through the game on Average Joe and enjoying it immensely. We have friendly fire turned off, but there is still ample room for hijinx because that does not apply to thrown weapons. Invariably I will have a great combo interrupted by an accidentally thrown bottle or something. I'm beginning to wonder just how 'accidental' these hits are. Especially when she finishes the guy off and steals the cash before I stand back up. :P

Little late on this, but I wanted to chime in.  The first 3 Scott Pilgram volumes may predate No More Heroes, but they don't predate the spiritual precursor to that game, Grasshopper Studio's similarly toned "Killer 7" in which you play as 7 deadly assassins (sound familiar?).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer7

Furthermore, the movie was made before the books were finished, and the end of the movie (where Scott starts using a sword and loads of suited goons are bursting as he slices them), which really, really feels like it was torn right out of NMH is very different from the book.  So to say that what your seeing when you go to the movie wasn't inspired by NMH isn't necessarily true.

I find it really weird that such a mainstream movie would have taken so much inspiration from a few realitively unknown videogames, but man, when I was watching it that was all I was thinking.

edit:  Just checked my math on this.  The very first volume of Scott Pilgrim does actually predate even Killer 7, meaning the similiarities between the two were at first coincidence.  I gotta think as the series went on (and when the movie was made) inspiration was pulled from the games.  The final volume didn't come out until just before the movie was released.

I think I must be getting old, because i really couldn't get into this. It wasn't awful, just not as awesome as the trailers promised. It's on about the same level as 'The expendables' in my mind.

3/5.
