Do you think this will look funny? My "shallow" arcade machine.
« on: February 23, 2010, 12:54:39 pm »
So I was putting together ideas for my up and coming project [several years in the planning or at least dreaming of... but career and home renos have kept the urges quiet until recently]. Due to the high cost of real estate these days [and I don't mean literally, I just mean my house is no mansion] I am thinking a cab that is only 2 feet deep, with a control panel that doesn't extend too far off the front. Where the monitor iwll go it starts out at 12 inches at the bottom and 7 or 8 at the top [using an lcd screen]. And it'll be 30 inches wide side to side. Here's a 3d thing I drew up in sketchup - look funny or alright?

Oh and my control panel isn't modeled yet - it is going to be 9 inches tall at the back [due to having a keyboard tray built in among other things] and will sit on that shelf there attached with stove bolts and wingnuts. The screen will be widescreen.

Will you be seated to play?

Looks uncomfortable for a standing person...

Looks uncomfortable for THAT standing person lol. like I said, my control panel will be 9" above that bottom shelf. I just haven't modeled the CP yet but will repost when it's done.

Without showing where the monitor and control panel will be, that really just looks like a poorly designed book shelf.

Ohhhhh I get what you're saying, due to height. No I don't think so. I dunno how tall that dude in the photo is supposed to be, but I'm 5'7 and my machine stands 6' tall with a 7 1/2" marquee.

Without dimensions, it's hard to say anything really about the design.

Just make sure you're not staring into the marquee - that could get annoying...

Yeah, you're going to have to provide a more complete mock-up with dimensions.

What you did is like posting a picture of a car frame and suspension and asking if the car looks okay...   ;)

There are quite a few examples of slim standups now that lcds are being used more and more....I think one that stands out that I recall is evil knievels woody

So the thin form factor can get some high praise on this forum

Well here's my 3d image. I like it, I suppose that's all that really matters. My choice to use a 27" widescreen will definately give it some weirdness but I think that I'll get used to it fairly quickly.
