AAL Domain improperly disabled... working to get it restored
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:03:56 pm »
Sorry guys, meant to post hear sooner. Somehow The abuse department at GoDaddy took the domain out as they say spam has been sent with the address. The problem is, their evidence shows it's just someone including the URL for the site, not relaying through it. It's just taking me a bit to get this through their legalese to get it reinstated (without charging me $75 dollars!).

Looks like your registration is up next year? Have you considered changing domain registrars?

Yeah, I have. I'll be evaluating the options when it comes up.

Look into Sitelutions as an option. I'm not 100% certain of their domain transfer process but they have an entire pricing scheme that's usually not listed in their public pages. I think they usually show a pricing scheme of 3-5 years but when you actually go to pay, it'll go up to 10 years with the usual price breaks.

I think it's one worth looking into to see if it fits your site.

In a nutshell, GoDaddy is holding the domain hostage. A hun or two to transfer the domain or a couple of hun to whitelist it again.

powweb is a perfect example of unethical overselling.  There's zero possibility of being able to provide enough people with unlimited storage at that price.  Dreamhost is another that promises such nonsense.

I don't use powweb so don't take anything I write as either yay or nay for the service.

Looking over their site, they do have "unlimited" whatever, but you have to have the same usage patterns as the rest of their clientele. This is almost exactly how Comcast markets their "unlimited" services. You certainly have unlimited bandwidth, but if you set the curve, you'll definitely be cut off.

Powweb appear to be attempting to position their business model to be favorable for the "small business" model. I'm not sure what exactly constitutes a "small business" but I guess it's not anybody like Microsoft or IBM. That said, they do explicitly explain their position on large quantities of data. Here is an excerpt direct from their website:
Quote
What is "normal" usage?

Normal usage means that you operate a personal or small business website that utilizes resources in a manner similar to most of our other customers. For example, the system requirements of large corporations are not equal to those of small businesses and their resource requirements would not be considered normal for our architecture. Another example would be the storage of large numbers of video or audio files that may be associated with a site, but require more resources to support than a normal personal or business website would.

Clearly, the type of "business" and the large number of large files associated with AAL is definitely not within powweb's idea of a suitable customer. Of course, I don't have AAL statistics, so I could be wrong about that.

This is still a bit rough around the edges as I've upgraded the 4images software, so I may have introduced a some bugs into the site. However, I have it all running as it was prior to it going dark. I've moved it to a new domain because that old domain just had to much spam and junk associated with it.

The new address is:

http://arcadeartlibrary.com/

I will go through the forum and change any of the links to go there instead.

Did you 301 redirect the old localarcade.com address to the new address?  Otherwise you are going to loose all of that great link juice you had built up....

The old domain is dead. The problem with the localarcade.com address was the old juice. There was way to much spam going out with the domain that was spoofed.

FYI, my box is still dead at the moment. The hard drive is starting to go, and I'm in the process of moving to a new host.
