No name sub mini asus eee 901 bartop proto build
« on: September 06, 2009, 02:49:52 pm »
Hi,

As the title says a quick test build just to play with the idea of a sub mini bartop that uses a webbook that is stock / not taken apart, so can just be put in when wanted and still be able to use for normal use when finished with.

Some specs on size:

13" deep x 13.5"ish wide and a touch over 7" tall..

I want to try and slim it down further get it to more like 10" wide but the usb port for the mini ipac and power are both on the sides so not sure how to work around that. then I wanted a lid / marquee that I could put some speakers in.

Hi I don't have any more pics at the moment but there is no back as it was just a quick test build. I am waiting on some new tools as I wanted to change a few things for the next revision. The dimensions are in the first post and I hope to update when I get to work on the next build. any ideas / suggestions are welcomed along with questions if you have them.

Cheers

He's using a webbook.

Is that the same thing as a netbook?

I have a couple of 4.5" screens from one of those car dvd setups. I'm looking into building a couple of mini's. I thinks they will work well if I can get the wiring figured out.

Correct it is the same as a netbook it is one of the older asus 901's with a 8.9" screen.

Looks good.

Makes me want to get out the unfinished sub-mini projects I have been procrastinating, now the summer has gone...

OK so been away for a bit and now back all over this project so here we go with some info and pics,

armed with some new tools and a few tips and tricks from the forums I have made the sub mini MKII it still uses a asus 901 that is completely unmodified so it can still function as a netbook when not in arcade use..

You can see in the photos that it is much cleaner than the first and smaller so much so it can basically fit inside the first one.

hope you enjoy.

Awesome work. Love it.
Next modification: make it so that the Eee quick plugs into a docking station inside the cab...  :D

cheers,

no dock option on the asus but only it needs the usb to be plugged in and its ready to go so it's not so bad. Also there is no base or back so it really does just slip over the laptop and your good to go.

might need to get some internal-ish shots and all that jazz.

Hey, this looks great!  I love the revision.  How much did this cost you?  I have an Asus eee 701 that I'd like to do something with but still have the option of keeping as a netbook.  Would you be willing to sell one of these to me?  I think a lot of Asus owners would kill for one!  :applaud:

I am currently building a second unit and am looking to sell them, the idea is that they are accessories as everyone is giving away netbooks I did think it would appeal.

In terms of cost we all know what controls cost + interface is the best part of 75 - 80 quid for 1 player setup with credit and 2 player start buttons 6 play buttons all sanwa including sanwa control also a mini ipac.

chuck in wood and perspex paint looking at the best part of 100 just for parts, I dont really know what the build time is so its hard to put a cost on it.

what would you be willing to pay?

My son has a 701 so I can get some pics of that in the current finished build if you wanted to see it.

Let me know due to the size it would not be a problem to post also I am happy to change colour of cab and buttons if you had any prefs.

Cheers

James

Well, I'm broke right now, but I'd like to have one in the future.  I think $150 would be a good price, considering how cheap netbooks are nowadays.  I understand if you need to charge more though.  I just can't justify spending more than that.  If you do go ahead with it, I would suggest listing them on the eeeuser site.  I'm sure a bunch of people would love to have one.  I run GameEx on my 701, and the games run great.

If you get a chance, could you upload a picture with a 701 in there.  Also, could you show the back?  Thanks!

Hi,

I can understand being broke I'm the same at the mo. I will try to get a couple pics up this weekend as for the back there is none but will pic it anyhow. at the current exchange rate it cost $130 just for the controls and ipac nevermind other materials and time also postage but could look at making one that you can fit your own controls in as it might work out cheaper that way??

Yeah I need to get on the asus / netbook forums.

Cheers

James

Is it possible to make one of these with Happ controls and still keep the small profile?  Happ parts are much cheaper, plus I like the old school feel of them.  Just a thought.
