My first kind-of hurricane . . .

. . . is here.

Tropical storm Fay is touching down in Miami.  If it reaches hurricane status it will only just reach hurricane status.  So it's pretty small.  Probably no big deal.

Hurricane? That's funny, last night i dreamt I was in a hurricane. I was outdoors and had nowhere to take cover so I had to tie myself to a tree so i wouldn't be blown away.

 ??? :dizzy:

Hmm . . . that seems kind of ominous.  I feel like I shouldn't have said that.  It's got that famous-last-words vibe going on.   ;D

I rode out many a hurricane when I lived in Houston, but it usually wasn't as strong once it reached me (Channelview).

If you do stay, go outside when/if the eye passes over you. It's too cool. (Imagine the sky spinning around you while the weather is calm)

If it's going to be too strong (they can increase in strength suddenly at times), I suggest leaving. They're more than just a bit of wind. (I live in Tornado Alley, though, so a hurricane doesn't seem as bad)

I've been through 3 of them.  Gloria in 1986, Bob in 1989 (I think) and the one that hit Southeast PA in the fall of 1999 I think.  Nothing too special.  Insane amount of wind and rain, losing power, watching trees bend over nearly in half, hearing the roar of the storm.  Never saw any tornados or anything too spectacular, though the eye of Gloria went right over my house when that one hit.  I remember the sky being black and the wind going insane, then nothing.  Stepped outside and there was blue sky up above and green/black sky all around whipping like crazy.  Then, just as soon as the rain/wind/storm stopped it picked up again and nearly lifted my tiny little 6 year old body off of the ground.

So far it's been nothing.  Mostly just a medium drizzle, with short spurts of heavyish rain/wind, but no heavier than just a normal, big storm produces on a regular basis.  It's weird too, cos all the schools shut down today.  There was no reason for it.  The only thing I can think of is that these storms must be pretty unpredictable and have a tendency to suddenly turn really really bad, so if there's even a chance of it everyone shuts down.  School's canceled tomorrow too.  If only my daughter's daycare wasn't closed.  I could work on my cab undisturbed all day long.

Welcome to the typical Florida hurricane season.  I've lived in Florida for close to 26 years (with 3 years off when we moved to VT.)  So far the worst Hurricane season we had where we live (hour north of Tampa) was in 04.  3 of the 4 storms that criss-crossed the state pasted over our house.  Luckily, unless the storm is going to be a direct hit, the west coast of the state is safe.  Most of the rain/tornadoes are on the east side of the storm.

I think ever since Andrew, everyone is better safe than sorry when it comes to public safety.  Hopefully everything is good and you stay somewhat dry down there.  Send the rain our way.   ;D

In the early 90's all of the schools in our state were shut down early for Hurricane Hugo...and I live in WV! It sprinkled a bit and that was all. It was pretty cool to get to leave school though.

That hurricane was nothing to the folks on the East side of Florida south of West Palm.

Heres a quick tip, it's not a good idea to go kite boarding during a hurricane.

Quote
FORT LAUDERDALE,Florida,August 18/08'Emergency officials have been warning South Floridians to seek shelter during Tropical Storm Fay but a man in Fort Lauderdale seeking some thrills on the rough surf didn't heed that warning and ended up in the hospital after being hurt in an astonishing kite boarding accident that was caught on camera.

Ha!  I remember that!  We had a hurricane party that night, but I don't even remember any rain.
