**2008 BYOAC Token FRONT SIDE Design Thread**
« on: July 20, 2008, 09:38:03 pm »
This thread is for the design discussions and proposals regarding the FRONT side of the 2008 BYOAC token.

We are designing  .984" (25mm) tokens.  So that all entries are judged equally, submissions should be in grayscale only, without bling. (Bling refers to color, photorealistic renderings. If we get a volunteer to bling all entries at the end equally, we can do that.)  White should indicate the lowest point of the token, black the highest.  If you want to show partial-height details use shades of gray, Different levels of gray are OK.  Of interest as you design,  the 'lowest' or 'deepest' point on the token will usually be shiny because it doesn't require machining.

So that those of us who are not Photoshop Gurus are given a fair shot , no 'blinged' renderings should be posted.

Guidelines/Rules
-No R-Rated material
-No trademarked or copyrighted images. (Pacman, etc...)
-MAME references are OK though, we have approval to use the logo if we like as long as we respect the spirit of MAME - i.e. no references to playing thousands of games, etc.
-No Bling - refer to the 2004 thread below to see how blinged line art turns out.
-Should display "Build Your Own Arcade Controls" (or at least "BYOAC") and the www.arcadecontrols.com URL   because BYOAC is the whole point of the tokens.
-If at all possible you should have your art in vector format. (Adobe Illustrator AI for example.)  Next best is very high-res raster (Hi-res meaning greater than or equal to 300DPI,) but I discourage it because we have always used vector with superb results.  Low-res artwork won't work, you will need to have someone fix it up for you.
-Vector fonts need to be converted to curves.
- .002" is the absolute minimum line width.  While lines can be reproduced at this scale, text may not be readable for being too small.
-The 'lowest' or 'deepest' point on the token will usually be shiny because it doesn't require machining.

If you are submitting what you consider your final proposal, please say so in your post. Otherwise we will assume you are submitting it for group discussion and tweaking.

This is a good sample from 2004:

Here are previous years' threads for reference.
2007 Back
2006 Front
2006 Back
2005 Front
2005 Back
2004 combined thread

Final Designs must be submitted to this thread no later than August 24, Midnight Eastern Standard Time.  This is a strict deadline so that we don't wind up delivering the tokens in December like last year.

After that date I will create voting threads with the final entries.

Been eagerly awaiting the 2008 design comp. It's always great to see the incredible stuff this bunch comes up with.
As with previous years, I'm in for 200 as long as they're half decent, so get designing people. Whoohoo.

I like the background with the repeated BYOAC but the picture is terrible. Took me a while to actually figure out what it was, perhaps if you spin it around and lower the viewpoint so we're looking more from behind the player?

I think it looks cool. I like that you look at it for a bit, and it has that ah ha! kind of moment. Much like playing games of the 80's.

Vorghagen, don't make us all suffer because someone creates a design too clever for you to understand.

Too clever? He did figure it out. It was tough for me to figure out at first too. Regardless, I don't particularly care for it, other than the background which I like.

OK. Sorry, my bad.
I could have phrased that a little better. I don't mean to be outright mean in criticising her design, especially since my own design skills are near zero, just trying to be constructive. I said what I liked, what I didn't like, why I didn't like it and what I thought might make it better. Isn't that the whole point of "group discussion and tweaking"?

Sez, my sincere apologies if I offended you. I really do appreciate people willing to design the tokens for byoac and hope that you will continue to do so. I will try to be more subtle in future.

I'm no artist either, but like I said, I do like the background - I'd love to see it end up on a token. So definitely a positive contribution! :)

Let's try again.  Got four examples of a similar style - some lighter, some darker.

These are also open to discussion and/or tweaking.  Let me know which you prefer (if any).

Like the last design shown, with the guy in black (highest point on the token). I quite like the prospect of a 'Matrix' style lettering effect though, like the green Matrix code you see on the films. Perhaps you could replicate that effect, with the BYOAC lettering?

Another vote for #4. Great design.
I like the idea in #1 of having the picture a kind of watermark behind the writing but I'm not sure if it'd work too well on a token.
Love the design of the player too, the kind that really gets into the game they're playing moving their body as much as the joysticks.

That matrix lettering idea that turnarcades suggested sounds pretty good too.

The Matrix idea is way too played out...

The style Sez first made me think of the Time Out tokens.

The main reason Mr. C's token was such a big hit was the vintage aspect of it and had the mechanical feel of the token pushers found in 80's arcades. If we are playing the games of our past, we need to keep a dated feel to the coins. Perhaps a more 80's feel this time. Using the Matrix idea gives it too much a late 90's/early 2000's feel...

I'm torn between the fonts. The first has that wonderful retro feel while the second flows better and is easier to read. The dot matrix, while quite interesting, seems to chop up the text too much. Thoughts?

Sez.

I love the new design with the side of the cab.

For the background, which is sweet, the pattern is broken by the first letters on the left. Could you make it so that B Y O A C is always in order? (So there's never YYOAC and OYOAC and AYOAC etc.)  Go ahead and start the middle five rows with B Y O A and C, but make sure the next letter is the next in that series.  And put the first letter of each row back to Black, that was cool :)

Code: [Select]
    B Y O A C B
  B Y O A C B Y O
B Y O A C B Y O A C
Y O A C B Y O A C B
O A C B Y O A C B Y
A C B Y O A C B Y O
C B Y O A C B Y O A
  Y O A C B Y O A
    A C B Y O A

The style Sez first made me think of the Time Out tokens.

The main reason Mr. C's token was such a big hit was the vintage aspect of it and had the mechanical feel of the token pushers found in 80's arcades. If we are playing the games of our past, we need to keep a dated feel to the coins. Perhaps a more 80's feel this time. Using the Matrix idea gives it too much a late 90's/early 2000's feel...

You know...Mission, this just sparked an idea. How about some Repro tokens Sanotoro? I would love a set of minty Time Out tokens from the 80's.

Since they're long out of business...I would imagine you could do it no?  ??? ;D
Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

Here is my lame-o attempt.  I was really trying to come up with something to go with jfunk's 'army of 1UPs', but I don't think I succeeeded.

I'm confused.  Somehow I had the idea we only got 3 layers or different depths on the coin -- is that not true?  Santoro mentions allowing multiple shades of gray in the coin???

No limits that I am aware of.   I wouldn't go nuts however.

edit: Clarification... They must be discrete levels of gray.  You can't design true 3d objects because the Mint will want to charge 'coin' rates which are out of my reach.

Another attempt at making a front for jfunk's 'army of 1ups'.  Probably we'd have to modify one or the other to have the same 'outer ring' design.  I tried, but I don't have the skills.
