Newbie Help! Mala Layouts!

Hi all,

I'm looking for some help...I have an old system (win98) that I have installed mame .106 (command line) and mala. Everything runs fine until I try to use the retroGUI I got from the mala site....  I follow the instructions with the download and when I change the path to the layouts folder in the mala dir and hit ok all that loads up is the arcade screen...no text, no nuthing but the image, can't even right click, have to ctrl alt del and end the task...

if anyone can shed any light on what I may be doing wrong please let me know.
