My new unit Mame Marve Arcade
« on: January 26, 2008, 09:35:46 am »
I have worked on this design for a while mostly just drawing on napkins at lunch and stuff, then I put my drawings to the test 2 weeks before Christmas and I have just completed my project. ;D
I call it Mame Marvel Arcade, as I have always built the standard arcade cabinet that we all still love,  for this one I wanted to be different, so I made it slim at only 11" wide and 6' high, the control panel is standard size, but I wanted to keep it simple so only 2 lit joysticks and 6 buttons each, a lit 3" Happ trackball, and the 2 buttons for the mouse, all the other buttons for player control and Emu control are on the upright above the panel.
The monitor is an 27" Viewsonic LCD.
I wanted to take this moment to thank all of you that have inspired the rest of us to dream, and to think that we really can build these great machines!
Thanks for any comments, I am not very good at taking pictures so if there is any questions just let me know.

Paul

Wow! That's a fantastic looking cab. I wish I had your woodworking skills to build something like that!

Wow - totally sick dude.  All of the LCD cabs tat keep popping up are really pushing this hobby to the next level.

How did you finish the sides - is it laminate?  paint?  This thing is awesome.

Very nice! great piece of design.... I'd even go as far as to say that it's the next generation of arcade cabinet. A logical progression.

Thanks guys I used 3/4" Mdf for a smooth finish, I then primed it twice and painted it with a spay coat call hammered metal, It really came out nice, the black on the front is all Lexan back painted black and bent to follow the shape, I dont know why the picture of the front makes it look like rough paint near the control buttons, it must be a reflection as it is shinny and smooth.
Thanks again for the nice words, it means alot to me.

Here is a couple more pictures, 1 of the buttons on the back, 1 of the control panel, and 1 of the computer.
As for a cabinet making company using my idea, I think I would be proud, I hope that I will see similar ones here in B.Y.O.A.C.

This is absolutely beautiful.  Perfect design and good enough to be a retail product.  Better get a design patent on this baby! :notworthy:  I do believe you have set the standard for new LCD design ideas.

I was reading the thread and this captured my sentiments -- I'm a classic cabs guy at heart and a design like this wouldn't end up in my gameroom, but it is really nice work and a refreshing design.

Knievel It is nothing compared to the master pieces that you put together, it will never see the Hall of Fame or a Mamey, but I like it, and thank you for your comments.
Maybe it does need to get a Guitar Hero into it.

Actually Paul, I vote that it should get a Mamey Award!  Guys please consider this cab for that. It's certainly an inovative piece of qualty design that deserves a bit of recognition. I certainly would be proud to have that on display.

I totally dig it. Very similar to an idea I was working on, going with a showcase-style, but different. Way better than anything I could have ever come up with.

The only thing I would note, is that the colored buttons on the front of the machine don't quite match up with the rest of the look. Although that could just be the picture. The only place you use green or yellow in the whole design is in those two buttons. Other than that though, this is quite awesome. You should be very proud of it.  :applaud:

Yes I see what you are saying, Andy only has this 6 colors available, I would have love to go with a purple, this light up from behind with an LED, they do look nice, the Yellow says Coin on the front and the Green has EMU on it, since I use Maximums Arcade as a front end and run different Emulators on it I need this button to switch platforms, if a new color that is more suited to the machine comes out I will surely replace them.

Thank you,
Paul

It actually makes it look a little (old-style) Doctor Who-ish.

At this time they are running at wide screen, I have not seen to much stretch, but I have not fire up a nice PacMan game so we will see.
Thank you!

KRJAMK I am using an ATI with 128Meg memory nothing fancy on the video card, most LCD TV have VGA inputs, as is the case with this one, so you just tie a VGA cable up to it, I also have cable going to the unit to be able to use it as a normal TV if the mood ever hit. :dunno

The bottom of the base is 3/4" MDF then 1 1/2" wood then a 2nd level of 3/4 MDF unit is very strong and has no feel of it flipping at all.
Thank you for your post. :dunno

Very awesome man!!! I dig it a ton!! I was wanting to use my 32" LCD at one point in time but never could come up with a way to make it fit into a cab and look decent. This idea is brilliant. I have since used the LCD in my bedroom instead and im happy with it but if I were ever to look into the LCD route again this would be the way to go!!

Nice work, and congrats on the gameroom mention!!

Excellent project. I'm just beginning here, collecting ideas, but this goes near the top of my list for when I build a full console.

(I'll have to make a project announcement soon too, just bought a set of U360s and some buttons to build a stand along panel.)
