Moon Patrol cab built from scratch !
« on: January 22, 2008, 06:51:35 pm »
hey im building a moon patrol cabinet from scratch and as fun as it will be it will also be hard, i couldn't of done what i have so far with out the help of 'jakobud' and the great guy from 'noiselandarcade' but of course being in the uk i have to use mm ! so i have done my best with there help and drawn up these plans.

if anyone can check them to make sure there correct and give me a few pics of how the marquee fits in i would be very please !

PS im not calling my diagrams the most brilliant things in the world ! but i think you get the jist !

there .wmf's but windows XP can by standard view these anyway :D

Always loved that game. I would be humming that tune all day after I had played Moon Patrol.

Moon Patrol is one of the few rasters that might become a keeper for me if I came across one.  Great, great game.  Classic music.

Now I have that song in my head.  I actually don't mind.   :)

I'll be following this project and very happy to see a new Moon Patrol come into the world.

-im 16 !
-i have never done anything like this before

positives .... im getting a GCSE out of it !

Unless you have expert help, don't expect to be able to build a full cab in less than a day of time if you have no experience.  That is a very difficult goal.  Don't be afraid to scale it down a bit to a bartop or cabaret.

i cant scale down now ! not enough time to re do the coursework !

and i will be going back after school every day to work on it and i have been studying the internet for 2 years now so have a 'ok' knowledge !

the PC isn't a problem, and neither is the wiring i have done all that and its looking good BUT i have no real experience of building something quite so big, luckly my teacher is pritty good and im really hoping i will be left to go in another room on my own and get on with it because the rest of the class is making fishing tackle box's or small things !

if i can do a hour after school each day then thats 20 extra hours ! so thats handy i supose but its still going to be tight !

Hang in there, and make sure you go in each day with a clear idea of what you'll be doing, what needs to be cut, what needs to be glued et c. You'll run into a few bumps, but the more you plan the more smoothly it'll go. I couldn't see the .wmf files properly, they were all black when I loaded them, but good luck!

The pictures work fine for me. I used "Windows viewer" instead "Windows picture fax viewer" if that is any different. Doesn't work in MS Paint and I cannot save it to Jpeg though. Odd. Maybe a background color that is set to black? The white lines/texts do still show.

blah, the forum just ate a really long post I made. Anyway, heres an animation of one of the cabs I made. It goes by quick so here's the run down (in summary because I don't want to type all that up again :P)

First I squared the base with 2x4s, screwed, glued, and clamped them down.

Then I put the front and back pieces up, made sure they lined up, glued them and screwed them along the bottom. Make sure you countersink your screws, unless you want them exposed.

After the front and back were secured I turned it on its side and put the side piece on, screwing through it and into the side of the front pieces. When screwing into the side of MDF you have to be careful not to get too close to the edge, or it'll kinda rip through it. If you can, get someone to help you move and position the side pieces. I had to do the whole thing alone and it took 3x longer than it should have.

I screwed 2x4s to the inside of the side pieces for the TV tray to slide onto.

The top pieces went together the same way, I made sure they were aligned with the back then clamped a 1x2 for the piece to rest on as I secured it in place. I think I used some L-brackets for extra support but they weren't really necessary.

There are a lot of ways to fit the marquee in. I routed a slot into the top most piece to slide the plexi into, then secured the bottom with a piece of wood wedged between the plexi and an L-bracket. Not the most professional way, but it worked. If you're going for a perfect replica of a moon patrol cab, I can't help you there.

Your control panel is a lot different than mine, looks like you can just screw it in from the sides like the other front pieces.. If the top part of it is metal you might want to consider just making it out of wood, and sanding down the front curve, unless you like bending metal.

One thing I noticed is the bottom of your control panel doesn't overlap over the front piece.. It'd be much easier if it did.

Well thats how I put mine together, hope it helps. If you want, you can give me the dimensions of each piece and I can put them into 3d space and make sure they'll all fit together with no gaps or other surprises.

i don't want to take advantage but i need as much help as i can get, any pics of the inside of the machine would be a great help

I also have the bottom coin door with the plastic coin box tub I also have the marquee retianer set.

I have the glass but it is blank with no art.

i at the minute and playing with a jamma loom and a J-Pac ! maybe its my microswitches but i think the guy has put the wrong connectors on it ! they are too small for the male bits on the microswitches.

i have the PC done and dusted so why the guy won't let me get on with it i dunno :-(

the altered beast ! well its the same cab i was looking at, then i realised what the cab was, looked at how long it would take mucking about with the altered beast artwork and decided it wasn't effeciant, but im still building the cab woowwoow moon patrol !

err if you go onto ummm arcadenoise of something he has the full bezel on there reproduced !!

thanks for the on going support :D

i may post my coursework up for you all to have a look at, but shush because AQA get funny is they think your cheating

thanks for the support and all ! the new dead line which is when teh moderator is coming in is end of april ! its looking tight but as im allowed to get the teacher to cut all teh inner shelves on the table saw that will save some time its just the side panels i had to do myself !

i gotta paint it and assemble it, luckily i got all the PC and TV ... in theory working ! i don't have a TV-OUT card in the PC im gunna use yet !

i have never done anything like this in my life ! so don't have a clue whats going to happen... i got a question,

i have drilled both panels indetically because there stuck together so i can screw in the shelfs and then fill over the screws BUT is it worth using support braces before i put it together or not? the whole thing is 18mm MDF and weighs a ton, im thinking 2 screws 1 dowel on each piece should do it, the dowel will hold it together whilst i line up it to do the screwing :D

now my teacher IS brilliant but is a very busy man and has told me i need special MDF screws but nothing more! so if i got to B&Q does anyone know what i gotta buy?

im privalaged to be able to do something so big ! the second biggest project is a childs cooker which is square anyway and the kid got his dad to litterally make it a flat pack ! (which isn't allowed)

hi

todays update,

first think to do was to get the side panels apart and after a bit of pushing and shuving and a few wedges here and there they were finaly apart and it was tec groupies 1 - sticky tape 0 ! BUT the tape left a nasty stick residue on the sides so with some white spirit, a cloth and a chisel i got it all off

next thing to do was to countersink the holes for the screw on panels

then as the sides were risen around the countersink i chiseled them smooth

then it was finally after a few hours today and months of sitting about time to put the bits i had together for the first time! luckily it seemed to go ok.

then there was just time to get a quick snap of the thing stood up with joe giving us a wave !

next update wednesday

Its great that you get to build it during school.  I took shop class with the same intention my senior year of high school, but only made basic parts (back door, speaker panel, and cps).  Anything that wouldnt fit inside the locked project cabinet would have been vandalized or destroyed the next day.
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

Good work buddy, that coin door looks familiar ;)

Have you designed your CP layout yet? What controls are you going for?

Are you still aiming for a multimedia cab for your form room? Is that what one of the lower shelfs is for? (some kind of AV equipment?)

What are you doing speaker wise?

that name does look familiar ! ;-)

well WOW go Mr C. ! i have brought my arcade control panel home as a piece of MDF and been given the change to draw out where the things are going and get on with it ! then in school drill and fit it.. anyone know the diameter of the buttons in mm?

well either way might as well keep it multimedia now .... but 6th form room seems unlikly ! the head of sixth form Andy Tetlow won £200+ on the horses this week so he should be happy ! i could maybe catch him at the right time but how much power do these things take!?

You will need to drill a 28mm (recommended) but you could get away with up to a 30mm hole using a Forster, spade or holesaw (depending what your shop has)

The OD (bezel) of the standard (Happ etc) button is 33.5mm.

If you come up with a design you like then let me know and I  can print you out a full scale 2d model of the CP so you can use it to mark the hole centers etc for drilling.

I think you will be playing your cab way before I get to play mine!   I like the Quake theme on the CP ( it is Quake, no? ).   Looking good!!

I didn't notice that.  Yep that's the Quake logo.
Back in MY day we lived on the moon and we had to build a rocket ship from scratch to get to the Earth before we suffocated.

yup ! Quake !! its all matching the CP, the front panel, the bezel and the marquee which when fitted will say 'Quake' and then underneith 'Arcade'

although it will be mostly mame i will try and get the quake games into mameWAH and it gives me a excuse to make another cab and network them !

and before anyone says :-O "thats a console game.... get it right!"  actually for a short time it was a arcade game... check klov for details BUT although the marquee will be very simiar to the original all the artwork is my own compilation.

do people like my artwork used? i will maybe upload it all for people to see
