New MAME machine with pics etc
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:40:26 am »
It's been a long time between project announcements but the latest machine is finally 'finished' .
My 'perfect' arcade cabinet has been a long time in the making, various projects have come and gone (and been canabalised along the way) but this is a keeper.
The cabinet is basically an MK1 cabinet built from scratch the only difference being the coin door section, I just didn't see any need for the 3 sided front.
I have always preferred powder coated steel control panels with no artwork (function over form). The marquee was going to be temporary but it has grown on me, I like the retro look of it. Side art may come later.
It's been a very cool project, I have loved every minute and I've been playing the absolute hell out of it for the last two weeks!

Some basic info

18mm mdf for the cabinet
2mm powder coated electro galv for the control panel
1.61GHz AMD Duron
256MB RAM
MAME version .86
Mamewah
Happ 3" trackball
Oscar Vortex spinner
Ultimarc T-Stick plus'
Ultimarc I-Pac
Ultimrac Opti-Pac
Ultimarc Arcade VGA card version 1
Ultimarc video amp
Segai monitor with 26" NEC Blackstripe low res tube
30W 8ohm speakers
Happ Kiosk amp
Coin door from CoinCascade, christchurch, NZ
Happ T-Molding
Happ competition buttons
Happ drinks holders
Happ speaker grilles
Marquee printed by Vivid Images in Hamilton, NZ

Thanks to Andy at Ultimarc, you are the man.
Thanks to all of you at BYOAC that have taken the time to answer questions. We have a great community here, one of the best I have come across in my interweb travels. Long may we game.

I posted these pics on another forum (one not even remotely associated with retro gaming) and got more response than this.

Not even an 'I hate your arcade machine, go die' comment?

OK, I'll bite.  I really like what you've done here - do you have any plans you could post?  Also, is that an arcade/VGA monitor?  Where did you get the bezel?

Nice job!

I like it. The midway style cab always make a good mame cabinet.

Do like the cp more flat like that?

I totally forgot about the video card, yes it is Arcade VGA, version 1

I should have thanked Jakobud because it was his MK1 plans that I used to create my cabinet (with a few adjustments) so thanks dude, your plans were very helpful.

The bezel was bought through CoinCascade Ltd in Christchurch, NZ same as the coin door.

I do like the cp flat but I have never really played on a sloped one so I can't really compare the two.

I really wanted a clean uncluttered control panel and it worked out well. I would recommend the positioning of the controls to others as well, very easy to play and nothing gets in the way of anything else.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

Sorry dude.

I haven't been here much.

You machine looks cool as and doesn't really need side art.
Only thing I would change  is its location 'cos its in your garage right?!

I must come and put my beer in the cup holders soon huh?
Oh, and play it too.

Nice work mate.  :applaud:

Cool!

I'm doing my cab black + red T-molding as well :) ... good to see some real pics to have a better idea of the results
I love the compact, simple and clean look you did there.
