I must say that I am dissapointed with this forum, as a newb, I have read the faq's and waded through hours of posts. However I notice that the number of repsonses of posts as opposed to views is grossly inproportionate. This seems to be the most extensive forum on the net, but any input however small would shurely be appreciated, at least an acknowledgment of a post should be warranted. Everyone here is interested in gaming and all it takes is a few words.

I wouldn't read too much into the number of views v. the number of replies. In a sense, this is an educationa/teaching/learning forum. I read almost all new posts simply to learn more about what I don't know. That applies both to topics that interest me and those that I don't think apply to me right now. But perhaps some time in the future, a past thread here may answer my question so I read all I can. The recent posts by U_rebel, RandyT, 2600 et al really shows how much some members understand and can share. They also make me realize that I have no clue about what they are saying because it is so advanced. But I read it to try and learn more. Most everyone here is great and shares because they want to help others.

I would imagine that a lot of topics and people fall into that category. And there are a lot of readers of this forum who are not members. They can not post until they register but their views on a topic still get recorded.

Finally, I read some threads purely for the entertainment value. Some are a riot to watch and see what happens!

You say that you have waded through hours of posts and then state in the very next sentence that you are bothered by the fact that there is more reading then posting. If you want to see postings, tell DrewKaree that he wears funny pants or something. Then you'll see an avalanche.

So you're basically pissed that you haven't gotten a response to the post you submitted a couple of hours ago, right? At least wait for the post to fall off the front page before getting impatient - then BUMP IT. If nobody replies, you might be asking the wrong question.

I read that post regarding the joysticks and didn't reply because I can't give an opinion on the Ultimarc (I have P360's). You did the research and found that there was no consensus so... if you ask which joystick is best in a new thread you're probably going to get more split opinions.

And what's with the need to be acknowledged? That's what the 'views' are for. If someone has something to contribute, they will.

I think it's often better that not everyone who reads a post answers it. For example, I may read something and say to myself, "Hmm, I don't know the answer to that". I'll keep my mouth shut - because the internet is already full of misinformation (plus there are times I think I'm right and post but I'm actually totally off). Anyway, posting, "That's an interesting problem" or "I don't know but maybe someone else does" does absolutely no good.

I guess I was more so talking about the posts who have zero replies and 88 -150 views. I have gotten a great education just by reading a lot of the posts, but I think that especialy for newbs, no matter how much a topic is discussed at least a point in the right direction would be appreciated. for example, I read all the ultimarc posts on the 360 and I got confused halfway through because it got too technical for me. I'm sure a lot of the guys here have a great understanding of the tech of cabs, but a response for some of the posts would be nice, no matter how short. I am a member of one of the largest motorcycle forums on the net and also HTPC and no matter how simple a ? seems or how many times its been discussed, we always try to give a response or at least point them to where the topic has been discussed.

no somunny, I know sometimes it takes a while to get a reply, but I've watched some posts go 3 or 4 pages down in 1 or 2 days, all I am saying is that even if you have no opinion or definitive answer at least point the poster in a direction.

Geez, your other post goes a few hours with no replies and your upset? Most of us do not have any experience with the 360 joysticks and have no useful advice to give. Many of the most knowledgable people on here work full time jobs and are only on the site a couple times a day, so if you ask a specific question you may have to wait a day for the answer. If you get no answer then bump it to the top and wait another day. If you still get no replies, then your justified to rant about no replies, but not until then.

I'm considering not posting in your other thread about light guns and trackballs simply because of your impatience. Maybe I'll wait until tommorrow to post my reply

Well, sorry but you state in your first post that you have read the posts on this forum regarding those two sticks. Where can I direct you? Sometimes there won't be a consensus about a particular piece of hardware. Read the info that's out there and make a decision.

Also, about that P360 vs. Ultimarc thread - it's not very well titled. That could also be your problem. "Joysticks and such" isn't necessarily going to jump out as a plea for info to most people.

Seriously? You want more posts "acknowledging" your posts and other people's posts? That's one of the best things about this board. It isn't deluged with 100s and 1000s of irrelevant and useless posts.

You complain no one pointed you in the right direction. There can be one of two reasons for this:

A. People who've read it so far thought it was something you should be able to find easily on your own, and they aren't wasting their time. (Note, this is a general possibility. I haven't seen your other posts, and am not trying to incite anything here.)
B. People who've read it can't give you a direction to point towards. Do you really want someone to post "Hey. Saw your post up there. Can't really tell ya what to do about it, though." What does that accomplish?

That's what the forum search engine is for. So rather than waste the time of typing out a reply, most forum members will simply ignore replying to the message. (Eventually someone will post just that instruction anyways.)

Patience Padawan. Your in a world of hacking, building, and assembling. Some things you can get an answer to. Other things you'll find is your the first one to do what your doing and you'll have to find the answer on your own. Either way, you'll need patience.

This is why I didn't post ... after all, it's not like anybody has an obligation to spend 30 minues digging up the relevant threads using the exact same search function that the OP would use.

Please bear in mind that folks have jobs (you rant about two hours that, for lots of us, are business hours!) and families, not to mention projects and that if people choose to pay attention to those things rather than answer the same question for the 999th time, that is their prerogative. And sounding off about the perceived lack of help simply means that they're less likely to post when they have time to help you out.

These aren't directed at the original poster.
They are just my observations about Internet forums in general...

The number 1 reason that a post gets no response...

-- having a vague or misleading subject

The number 2 reason a post gets no response...

-- when it is clear that the poster is lazy and just wants a quick and easy answer

The number 3 reason a post gets no response...

-- horrible grammar, spelling, lack of punctuation, ALL CAPS, or any combination thereof.

Sometimes, you have all three in the same post. The subject is usually something like...

"quick question" or "newb need help"

even worse are the subjects that contain the first few words of the post...

"when I install mame how do i..."

then the body of the post...

"get it to see my romz"

I am one of those members who work during the day and spend about 3 to 5 hours a week going thru posts that interest me or I can offer advice to.
However I NEVER expect 2 hour turn around on a post. I prefer good advice and not just some lame response. In other words the reason I CHOOSE to post here is to get that good advice and be glad I got it with out the attitude of some boards.

I've learned SO much from this forum, I've made great deals through this forum, I've made some "virtual" friends through this forum and yes I was a newbee too less than a year ago....on many subjects I still AM a newbee !

seriously, you have been here a total of 14 days and you have the balls to start telling people they should pay more attention to you. spend some time here READING other people's posts. you might learn a thing or two. there is no reason to reply to a post just to hear your keyboard click or increase your post count.
