Best 4-Player games?
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:34:53 pm »
Alright guys, please convince me that I need to upgrade my control panel from a 2-player setup to a 4-player setup! What are your favorite 4-player games? Off the top of my head, I'm excited about TMNT, Simpsons, Tower of Doom. What else?

I have a 2 player setup and would never consider going 4 player, but thats me b/c I never have 4 people at a time who want to play.  As for games I like NBA Jam, golden tee, for 4 player.
Its easy to like someone,

If you dont know them very well.

There's only one way to determine whether or not you should go with a 4-player setup.  Ask yourself the following question: "Will I have three friends who'll be over my place constantly playing my cabinet?"  If it's anything but "yes, definately" then you I wouldn't bother going with a 4-player setup.  Most, if not all, 4-player games play fine with two players.

Oh yeah...people will be crowded around this quite frequently. I just wanted to make sure there are enough good games that are worth the effort! :)

Then there's your convincing.  Have at it!     May I humbly suggest a game of Sunset Riders when you christen it.

4 player drunken Gauntlet playing is the best!!!!!

I also like some of the older 4 player coop fighters like Crime Fighters and Vendetta.  In addition, depending on how you layout the 4 players, you can also play 2 player Smash TV and Total Carnage with 4 joysticks.

Sunset Riders, The Cows of MooMesa or something.  WWF.

I was convinced to build mine while playing on a buddies four person.  It was Him, his two kids, and myself.  Just seeing how much fun we were all having made the deal for me.  I decided that even if it is once in a blue moon, it is totally worth it.

I believe there are some two player games which require each player to have 2 joysticks each (ie: Smash TV, Karate Champ(?), etc..)  this is why I built a 4-player control panel.    Wanted to be able to play "2-player" games which required two joysticks each.

Also, do not just think "Mame" .... there are many other consoles out there whicih are being emulated which would need to joysticks per player (thumb stick and directional pad lets say).

The only problem with this is most joysticks are horrible as thumbsticks/analog sticks.  They do not work well at all for any game that does not have a decidedly "arcadey" feel that doesn't need the sensitivity of the stick.

I wouldn't put this idea into your head when making the decision unless you decided to hack 4 analog sticks.

I am starting my cab this weekend hopefully if I can make some room in the garage to work.  I love the oldschool 4 player games like TMNT, X-Men, Sunset Riders, and Simpsons.  Saturday Night Slam Masters is a good one too, just cause I like Haggar.  Anyways I am only going two joysticks cause I don't know if I will ever get 4 of us together at the same time.  But what I am planning on doing is making some front USBs on the front of the control panel, and I will have two extra Xbox 360 wired controllers for the third and 4th player.  They will have 8 buttons total.  A, B, X, Y, LB, RB (ALL ACTION BUTTONS).  The two trigger buttons will be credit button and start buttons.  I will have those for the other people that come over.

I think that's only true with the newer console emulators with analog gamepads like Nintendo 64, PSX, etc.  You're right, they suck with digital arcade controls.  However, most of the older classic consoles like NES, SNES, Genesis, Colecovision, Atari 2600/5200/7800 work superbly with arcade controls IMO.  Much better than a crappy D-pad anyway.

completely true, but uncleT mentioned systems that would need 2 joysticks simulataneously, and the only consoles that have Dpads + analog sticks or dual analog sticks would be those newer systems.

NES, SNES, et al work great with an 8way joystick because it's just like a dpad.  Newer games on say, Xbox or PS2, will work great if all they use are the Dpad, but a lot of games lose a lot of playability when you aren't using the analog sticks, and a good number of games simply don't work AT ALL without them... and an 8way is not going to help you out there.

Anyone know if Blitz is playable with 8-ways?  I know it might not be optimal, but I'd be happy if it played well enough (just can't get past the feel of the 49-ways).

I've got NFL Blitz 2000 in my cab and play with 2 8-way sticks.  It plays great IMO.

(Voice of reason speaking)
(I hate the voice of reason)

Because I wanted to keep that Pac-man-era feel, I kept my control panel to 2-player at a cozy 24" wide.  I did, however want to have drunken Gauntlet brouhahae, so I mounted a few jacks like these:
http://www.datapro.net/products/1598.html
inconspicuously to the outside of the cabinet.  Now whenever there's a crowd, I just plug in a couple of gamepads and let players 3 & 4 use those.  I put a couple of jacks on each side, so in theory I could have a 6-player X-men smackdown, or keep some of those schweet lightguns plugged in, but I haven't gone there yet.

I recommend that solution.  It's cheap, keeps the cab looking clean, and is inconspicuous.

I can't remember the exact configuration, but you can remap the buttons.

My favorite PC games on a cabinet:

1. Lego Star Wars
1b. Tiger Woods Golf
3. NFL Blitz
