And if they overproduced and didn't sell, and they had to eat their shirts and take a huge loss they'd be smart?  This is far better for them in the long run.  It made the slim PS2 the "it" thing to have, because they were so hard to come by.  It probably also boosted impulse purchases at many locations, because people were hopping from store to store trying to find them, so they picked up a few things here and there.  We're at the end of a console cycle, sales are expected to be abyssmal, and the used market should have had several units available.  It's far more prudent to short produce an item like this in this situation. 
If no one feeds the trolls, we're just going to keep eating your goats.
