How well does Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 play on a MAME arcade machine?  From what I've read, you use the mouse (eg. trackball !) to swing so the game sounds like it would be 10x better than Golden Tee Golf.  Is this true?  How well does the game play on the PC/Arcade machine?

Also, does anybody have any other recommendations for arcade/pc trackball games?

I have have Tiger Woods 2004 on my cab and it does NOT play well with a trackball. I cannot achieve more than 80% on my swing no matter how fast I spin the trackball or what settings I use. I eventually resorted to the alternative swing method of button presses rather than  mouse movements.

It's a great game by the way but not for my cab unfortunately.

I've used 2002-2004 extensively and it works perfectly with the trackball.  100% (and more, if I overswing).  Great game for a cab!

Same here. I use 2004 and it plays great. What kind of trackball are you using. I've never had a problem with swing strength.

Yep, it plays well with a trackball.

My only issue with the game is that the fonts are too small and it makes it hard to read on my Mame TV.

I also have TW2004 and a Happs Golden Tee trackball and on a normal swing, I almost always go over 100%.  In fact, not having read the instruction booklet, I sometimes wonder if this overhitting is causing any negatives in accuracy.

I have an arcade monitor so need the game to run at 640x480 the only Golf Game I have that can do this is Golden Tee PC which I don't much care for.  Does anyone know of a newer golf game that plays with the trackball and does run at this res?  TIA.

How about a couple other recommendations for PC agmes that work well with a track ball. I know the one stick exists about  PC games for a cabinet but it doesn't necessarily call out trackball games.

Thanks,
John

count me as another one with TW2005 and it works great with the trackball. I generally hit about 90-100% and over 100% if I really spin it (and yes going over does affect your accuracy).

As someone else said, the biggest problem is the font size being hard to read (I'm running at 800x600 on a Betson Imperial 27").

As for trackball pc games, the 3 I have are golden tee pc, tiger woods 2005, and hamsterball (reviewed on retroblast site).  My daughter also plays Dora games and similar which uses the trackball as a mouse  (since she can't operate a mouse well yet it works great with the trackball...she's also gotten pretty good at hamsterball)  :)

meh, golden tee pc is by far the best golf game for a cab.  i have TW 2004 and its okay, but the feel of the trackball, and the feeling that me hitting the trackball a certain way and it effecting my shot is better than tiger woods.  just my opinion.

I have Tiger Woods running great on my machine.

One secret is that I am running a 3" Imperial/Betson trackball with the modified optical wheels from groovygamegear.com  -- This seems to significantly increase the sensitivity of the trackball and also substantially reduces the backspin and mishits.

  http://www.groovygamegear.com/cgi/surfshop/shop.cgi

They are under the "modifications" selection listed as "Trackball booster kit" for about $10

I recommend them.

Hmmm, I installed Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 and the text is horribly blurry.  The game is set to the lowest resolution (800x600) so I'm not sure what else I can try?  Is there any way to increse the font sizes?

I'm using tv-out (w/s-video) so I realize thats why the quality isnt there, but regular games (MAME, MAMEWAH, etc) look perfectly fine...

Here's my 2 cents with golden tee pc and tiger woods 2005...
I'm running both on the cab, and initially can into the golden tee pc can't hit a hooked shot.... Reset back to normal mouse sensitivity and run through the swing calibration a few times, if you crush the ball during the calibration, it tends to make the sensitivity a low lower. nice normal followthroughs during calibration make the "english" a lot more responsive. Also look for the pc version of the swing guide (mousepad) , I think I last found it on the golden tee PC website, the hooks and slices are opposite if I remember correctly from the arcade machine.

I also ran into the "can't hit over 80%" in TW2005. Are you perhaps playing as one of the default players, such as tiger woods? I noticed that tiger never hits over about 80% no matter what you try, but a player you create can hit the 100% and overdrive shots. But also Tiger woods uses trueswing (tm) technology, which, unlike golden tee which is about pulling back and killing the ball for power, TW requires a smooth and rythmic swing for best results and power.

We usually end up playing weekend golf tournys on the cab now, Tiger woods 2005 is the preference by far, as we've made custom characters using the character customizations (isn't is called trueface?) that look like each of us.....
Now if I can only figure out how to stick a beer bottle in hand and a smoke in mouth, the illusion would be complete.....  ;)

(p.s. NEVER I repeat NEVER create a character that looks like your pregnant wife..... 6 months and she still brings it up every weekend)

Does anybody know how to get this game to work with the ATI HDTV adapter?

Basically all I need is for this game to run at 640x432 instead of 640x480.  Anybody know how I can do this?

Can anyone tell me how they use there control panel to run Tiger Woods? What buttons play what role in playing the game? I am creating a control panel that I would like to make sure is setup for Tiger Woods PC game.

Thanks

The keyboard keys I use most playing Tiger Woods Golf are:

ESC
Left & Right Arrows (to turn player left & right)
E - Activates the shot target
1 - gets you out of shot target and back to regular view

What you can do is load a custom keyset into your keyboard encoder to make whatever keys you want be the proper game keys.  The game manual has all the keyboad shortcuts.  This way you would have a default MAME keyset and then a custom Tiger Woods keyset.

As far as I remember, I don't need ANY special buttons to play TW.   I have a trackball and the 3 mouse buttons are buttons on my CP.  Other than the joystick (which turns your player) that's all I use for the game.  You may have to enter a players name or something if you're creating a golfer, but for general play all the commands you need are accessible by a mouse (so in my case, the trackball/3 buttons combo).

So for example if you want to change your swing type, you don't need a button for that, you point the mouse to the area in the left of the screen, click the left mouse button and it pops up a menu with the different shot types.  I suppose you could have shortcuts to those actions with buttons, but its not required from what I remember.

The shortcut buttons aren't required, but they speed up gameplay.

E - Activates the shot target
1 - gets you out of shot target and back to regular view

FYI:  Pressing "E" (shot target) again will also "get you out of shot target" view... its kinda like a toggle on/off button.

I guess that depends on the configuration of your CP.  ;)

How about Outlaw golf?  I finally found it after misplacing the disc for over a year.  Does it work well with  a track ball?  Need to load it again.

You will be able to load it to your hearts content.  You could use a mouse, but what's the point without the trackball.  The only game I found suitable without a trackball is Golden Tee for the Playstation.  It was a lot of fun for a game lacking the trackball.
