Light gun issues
« on: September 12, 2004, 06:16:04 am »
Hey I'm planning on adding a light gun to my project because I love carnevil and time crisis however i dont have much experience in that area. I'm using a regular computer monitor NOT an arcade monitor, can i use the light guns available on happs controls and If so are they difficult to wire up? Or can I use a regular PC light gun??? like this from eBay

Is it even possible to add a light gun to a custom project.

I've heard that the older 2x holster Act Labs guns really suck (they are gameport I believe, and not as accurate as the newer USB version which everyone and their brother uses).

You want the USB Act Labs Lightgun (not the TV version).

I have one set up and it works flawlessly.  You just need to calibrate it if you change resolutions (you can set it up so all your gun games run at the same resolution, thus requiring no calibration).  You can even use two of them if you like with newer MAME versions.

Otherwise, there are two other lightguns that seem to work but are inferior.  See here: http://www.retroblast.com/reviews/lightgun1.html

You can use multiple act-labs usb guns on the same computer with a special driver.  It is supported in MAME as well I believe

The only problem is that ACT Labs has discontinued the PC lightgun(the TV version doesn't work with a PC monitor). There are rumors that they may be selling it again in a few months, but who knows. The one for sale that I saw on E-Bay was already up to over $60.00 in bidding.
