Deathsmiles - Anyone got this running 100% (Linux CD Installation)
« on: September 04, 2013, 09:24:25 am »
when playing deathsmiles on an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Quad-Core, i was struggling to get the game to run at a constant 100%, but instead it would vary between 85% - 103% and the sound would be all over the place, slowing down and then speeding up.  wasn't great to play...

i just assumed the cpu wasn't upto the task, so just upgraded to an ivy bridge 3570k, with 8gb ram.  i haven't overclocked it, as i again assumed this cpu would be able to handle the game no problem, but it too is struggling to run it at 100% constantly, and the sound is again warbling.  it's not quite as bad as the amd, with the range of speed being between 96% - 102%.

why is is even going over 100%?  surely if it is struggling to run the game, it would only ever be slower?  how can it be faster?

i'm using the linux cd on a WG9200 monitor, and i again assumed i wouldn't have to chance any settings in the mame.ini file.  thought it was setup during the install...

do i need to change anything here?

or is it because the driver was never fully emulated and it's just the way it plays?

I know this is the groovymame section, but if you just wanna play the game, there is a pretty great xbox360 port.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Try to enable triple buffer in a game-specific ini.

The -triplebuffer option is Windows only. In Linux, try setting "syncrefresh 0" in a specific game's .ini file (note: disabling syncrefresh in mame.ini won't work). You'll have tearing but CPU use will be optimized.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

tried creating deathsml.ini with syncrefresh 0 - it sort of worked.  the sound isn't as garbled when it slows down, but there is sill much of the game where the speed drops to around 95%?  should this be happening with i5-3570k?

Just in case anyone else if having issues with Deathsmiles in windows I thought I would post this here since this thread helped me. I was getting slow down also in this game using groovymame 0.150 with cavesh3 150 driver. Game would be fine until a lot was happening on screen then it would slow to about 84fps and so would the sound.

My PC is a i5 2500k, 8gig ram and a HD4870.

Created a ini folder in my mame directory and added a text file called deathsml.ini which contained one line:

triplebuffer         1

Now the game runs at 100% all the time.

Thanks.

So I removed the INI file and set my mame.INI to d3d and it runs pretty much the same.

Some minor slow down but not often.

I found sometimes the auto frame skip is a little too hasty and that some games will benefit from disabling the auto frame skip and setting frame skip to 0.

Having said that, some of the Cave SH3 games I play have slow down issues with an i3 3220 (3.3Ghz) and ATI 4650 card.
