space zap,return to zapping!
« on: June 08, 2010, 01:59:45 pm »
this is my space zap, sorry no before pics.you would only go "ahh!why have you painted over that lovely artwork" wrong!cracked and falling apart artwork, vertical splits and small knocks etc etc.i want this cab minty and fresh as can be,i learned my lessons with my first cab and never intend to make the same mistakes again.

well i spent a lot of time sanding and filling and sanding some more and several coats of zinsser and sanding and several coats of top paint and here is where i am at.

left side:

right side:

the front:

yes you can see the back door also at the rear of the cab.

i got stencils made up,theres another thread in the part of the forum.i am just waiting for some stencil adhesive to attach the stencils to the sides to do the artwork.i will have to test run the different methods till i get it right before i try on the cab.

i had the metal parts shot blasted and powder coated.i bought a couple of start buttons for the cab.i am waiting on a midway door to arrive from usa as the one that was currently on the cab had the locked drilled out.salavged some parts though.

its got a wg v1001 monitor chassis with a broken ht lead,i will probaly send it to someone to get it sorted here in the uk.the game plays as i put it on a colour monitor on my jamma cab.i think it has as sound issue, not too sure as it is in demo mode, perhaps its louder when credited.i will have to sort that if thats the case.i already replaced components on both the sound cboard and a couple of blown components on the power supply.

so i am just finishing up the cabs top coat and then it will be artwork time, perhaps by the weekend?

it has all original parts, bezel and the little instruction plate that gos above the cp.nice mirror for top all nice plastic trimming.will be top cab when done and rare for england as far as i know.
:)

here in uk,you will not find one on craigslist.this is the difference between united kingdom and the americas and canada.you get everything arcade and usualy cheap.here that will be wortha small fortune.i payed £200 for mine with a faulty monitor and knacked door with a messed up door harness.the delivery cost me £70 so it was £270 not working monitor.

i mean i cant find a monitor for it to replace it all,you will find loads where you are.its a b/w wg v1001.the chassis is rare over here.

here in UK, you will not find one on craigslist. This is the difference between United Kingdom and America and Canada. You get everything arcade and usually cheap. Here that will be worth a small fortune.

I second that. Genuine arcade machines and parts are stupidly expensive in the UK.

i was not happy with the first attempt,i have sanded the side down and am waiting for more top coat paint.

i got the artwork on lobsided and its not even lined up right.

i did the other side today though, lot better:

just after eremoving the stencil:

stood up:

its a lot better lined up but,the other artwork went on better,i got to do all the touching up work and filling the parts that were missing in the stencil.so my work is cut out for me.

just the side i originaly did first to redo.

I hadn't heard of this game until I saw this thread. It looks fun.

i have redone the side i did at first originaly,i had to sand the side down and repaint it with top coat.i have stencilled the artwork in again:

it came out better in some places than the other side and worse in others.never mind as i got to rejoin lots of parts and i can always touch up with grey paint.

just a case now of cleaning the sides of the stencil adhesive residue and putting the parts back on.

because the artwork just needs joining up and a touch up here and there i dont need to lay it down horizantly and i can finaly start putting it back together.

i had all the retainers, speaker cover and the cp powder coated, just cost me £20.

so heres how she stands now:

i just need 2 more bulbs for the marquee, thats why most of the light is in the centre, the outer bulbs are missing.

i got a flyback for the wgv1001 chassis coming from usa, apparently that is the faulty part,so once thats replaced the monitor should be fully operational,i also got the tmolding coming from usa too.

This is looking very cool indeed.

That's good for the powder coating, where did you get that done?

I am toying with the idea of doing powder coating myself. My other hobby is restoring classic cars (my wife calls them old bangers  ::) ), so it would be a useful skill to add to my repertoire.

the powder coating was done by a local company here in bradford,it cost me £20 for the lot i took for shot blasting and coating.

problem was i never banged out the dinks in the cp,so when i got it,it had small dinks in it.can always bang them out in the future and take it back again.i have to make a journey to the same placxe again so they can shot blast the coin door and frame.i will be spraying them myself though.i bought 1 can of top coat so far and it is not a color match so i got to shop around, the coin door should be a grey color on this version of the game,so i am going to try and get the right grey to try to be authentic.

there are 2 brackets in the pic just either side where the mirror is on the top, left and right side, these are not supposed to be there,i removed them, filled in the screw holes and have painted over them with satin black.i have reattached the mirror now.

i got the coin door and frame shot blasted:

i primed it:

spray painted it satin black,i couldnt find the dark grey i would have rather had anywhere.i fitted some of the bits to it so this is where i am at the momnet:

i got a spare door/frame also,so i will have that shot blasted in the future,if i find the right grey colour for the door i will spray that and fit that one.i have to take the coin slots to get them chrome coated.i fit all the bits back on the door, coin mech holders/frame,coin metre and switchs.

all the bits are wired up now and the game credits and can be started from 1p/2p start, plays nice and loud, had to turn the vol down.the coin door wont accept the metal coin mechs i got,it will take the plastic ones though, the plastic ones i got are for 25c.

so now its a case of sorting the monitor chassis out and a monior cardboard surround, putting the monitor overlay and bezel on and tmolding and then i can concentrate on the artwork and finishing off.

recieved the flyback from usa today and fitted it to the chassis.

yes,she lives again!

i just photo'd everything on the underside of the flyback and fitted the new one and soldered everything back.

just a prob with width, there is a width adjustment but,it dont have a screw/turny thing on it,so what would be best way to turn it,anyone know?

i just need 4 bolts and nuts to secure the monitor in place and i can fit the overlay and monitor bezel back and the project will be a bit closer to finished.

and yes that is bad screen burn you can see,it looks like an old baseball game monitor.

am currently polishing the side plexi glass's so its taking quite a while, its a lot of elbow grease but,i nearly got done with the novus3 and will be switching to novus2 when the bottle of novus3 runs out.even then the novus2 will take time to be used up,i will use the job lot as i got 2 plexis so i got 4 sides to do.a final polish then with novus polish and i will think about bolts and bnuts to reattach them to the cab.

i got a midway coin door logo plate, wont attach it till near the end.

than its just leg levellers and i have to paint all the parts of the side art that are missing.

my other projects are getting some attention now at the same time.

Great job. I like the game too, it's so basic but a lot of fun. I guess the mirror is there to show off your skills to the public in the arcade?

When I first saw the picture of this machine I also thought it was a cabaret. However, there _is_ a cabaret version too, you can see the differences between upright and cabaret on the flyer:

It looks like an overlay was used on the screen, does your's have it ?

I only played this game on a German bootleg cocktail and I really liked it.

Pretty amazing that there are stencils available for this game, where did you get them ?

yes,i got a stencil company here in uk off the internet to cut me them with reusable mylar (think its mylar) cost me quite a lot too.they are available to buy if anyone is interested in them for a restore they might want to do.

all i have done with the cab uptodate is have the 2 coin entry plates powder coated and i am still slowly plodding on with the novus polishing on the side plexis.

i have been a little side tracked as i got a midway invaders on the go and thursday (i think it will be thursday) i got 2 missile command cocktails coming so i have to sort them out or get them to a certain point where i can turn my attention to other cabs.so the space zap is stuck in a corner now as i have need of the room for the 2 cocktail tables.will update the thread when the plexis are done and fixed back.
